It may be a regular gardenia jasminoides, or it may be a gardenia species that grows much taller (up to 10 feet) and has smaller flowers, commonly called Cape Jasmine. Of course, it's hard to know until it blooms, but Cape Jasmine (which is also a common name for G. jasminoides, btw, so it's confusing) has larger, lighter colored leaves and blooms more profusely. To make it even more confusing, this taller variety used to be named Gardenia augusta, which is now the name for G. jasminoides as well, so welcome to the confusing world of plant nomenclature.

I only know this plant exists because when I worked at Duke Garden center in Venice, we had one growing in the shade house, and Bill was always having to chop it back because it grew so fast. We used it for propagation, because it wasn't available commercially anymore.

This has more about the Cape Jasmine. Seems it has a name "Aimee Yashioka." I remember seeing gardenias marked as "Aimee," so that may be it.

The blossoms have started opening and I compared to Aimee Yashioka pictures on goggle images. It didn't look the same to me. Scent is pleasant.
