Don't buy anything expensive...you will need to replace whatever you get in a few years anyway....dogs/Pets do a lot of damage no matter how hard we try.....buy something inexpensive and enjoy cuddling with your pet! Some tight woven fabric tweeds (not polyester it will pill) a wool blend is best...in a medium color will work well too! Just get it cleaned often....

always put a throw on the sofa before letting him up. dogs can smell and it's easier to wash a throw blanket. it will also protect whatever you get from his nails. they will scratch leather and pull on woven fabrics. always keep your blanket on the seat cushions. The other reason is when people come over and want to sit, not everyone wants to be covered in pet hair, drool and doggie smell! you living there all the time won't smell it, but your guests will. remove the throw blanket when visitors come over to sit.

I liked to cuddle my dog too (RIP) but I also liked my sofa. I bought the dog a very nice dog bed that matched the same upholstery on the couch and put it right next to it. she stayed in her bed, and we stayed on ours. If you are going to be spending thousands for a nice sofa, get the dog his own bed and cuddle him on the floor. Otherwise, may I suggest Ikea??

I would buy him his own Ikea slipcovered sofa. Snuggle on his sofa! My papillon makes a huge mess licking his paws so we make him sit on a blankie :)

Good advice from HIWE. If you have the option of fabric choice ask to see contact fabrics that have a very high rub count; 80- 100,00. Double rubs. These fabrics are designed for commercial install and can take a real beating.

Sorry, I meant contract fabric. These high performance fabrics usually come with fabric protection; it helps to read the label when buying a sofa to see what your getting . Better yet if you can order a sofa and pick your fabric! Here are some examples of very hard wearing fabrics from Kravet. The wysenbeek # is the double rub info.

You could also put Soft Paws on his nails (much cheaper alternative). It is a nail cover that is plastic and rounded so you don't have to worry about the sharp nails. You can do them yourself or have a groomer do them. They work well on hardwood floors as well to prevent scratching.

We have a Great Dane and a leather couch made by Thomasville. There isn't a scratch on it. He lays on the couch, sits on the couch, and plays on the couch daily.

I can't add much to this, but I can't imagine spending what you would spend at RH or Arhaus and .... while dogs are in the "puppy" stage (1-2 years) just buy something cheap and then later you can get a better quality sofa. Hate to see folks waste money.

I've got leather sofas and my two small dogs are always on them, leather still great. Get leather and add a couple of thick throws
