container heat and temperature

can the soil in containers become "too hot" in the summer?

I'm growing some tropical and subtropical plants and have noticed the soil in the container is warm. the plants seem to be doing fine so far (highs 80-90), but is the higher temperature harmful to microbial life or the roots? windering if I should shade/shield the containers.

i did notice that fire ants liked the containers in late winter, possibly because it was warm, or perhaps because they hid under the container and incidentally crawled up into the container
