White paint, I'm afraid with that much area a "pickling" or whitewash might look too uneven.

Also, I thinking painting it will lower the resale.

Also possibly look at stripping off the current finish (which may have yellowed) and changing the stain.

Interesting. I wouldn't paint (I have some painted cedar sheathing in my house also.)But if you can do it, strip it done and stain it very light. I also don't think you can ignore the dramatic/imposing ceiling. I think you need to integrate that theme (of angularity) into the rest of your decor. Also, if you can live without it, ditch the fan. It draws attention to the ceilings. But I'm not a designer.....just in the middle of taking a 70's NW contemporary into a transitional look.

Stain or paint - Either option will not be easy to do, I suspect.

Absolutely right; nor will it address the issue effectively.. The closer lighting is placed to the living area, the more the ceiling receeds, regardless of its color. That means your (new) fan light need rods...and brothers and sisters. For a start. A lighting designer could fix this for you properly, and would be money better spent than ceiling colour. Much luck w your project.

I would not paint it. If you don't like it you can make it a dark color.

Because it is already sealed....it would be a ginormous pain to strip of the sealing and restain+reseal.

I would highly recommend this to you as an alternative.

This product is a stain and a clear coat at once. It's sticky like a clear coat...and paints on stain color like a paint. The trick of this is...the more you layer on...the darker it gets. And if you want one even coat of color...you have to be very careful as you work...it starts drying quickly and if you overlap strokes it will be clearly visible = BAD.

Making the wood a darker color will preserve this beautiful woodwork.

Painting over it seems like a tragedy.

Oh...I just reread this. If you go with a darker wood...it's going to get darker.

If you want lighter...I think your only option is to paint it...again that seems like a tragedy.

Definitely paint it! I would use a grey white and I would definitely take down the fan! To take the stain off would be an enormous task.

I would refinish it i know it would be expensive but that is very nice wood to just paint it. One thing though that wood will always change in color over time it oxidizes no matter what you put on but you can minimize it by choosing stains that don't have to much yellow or red

The ceiling is quite stunning. Love the shapes. Although I do understand it is overpowering.
I hope you can find a way to live with it without painting it.

Don't paint it... Brighten it up with a different finish, different lighting, or add some contrasting features to it - different woods or some painted trim to highlight some of the better shapes. If you paint it, it will look worse like a white fence on your ceiling and you can't go back... Good luck!

I don't hate your ceilings at all. I've seen photos where people have painted their wood ceilings and they do look great, but I really hope you don't go that direction. Try uplighting them -- its a dramtic effect on a wood ceiling (painted or natural).

I like the Wedge fixtures shown here ... and maybe a skylight or two ? ...

Before I read your comments my first thought was "hey cool ceiling." That said, I have a deck house that has wood ceilings. Several years ago a tornado blew half my roof off. I was going to try to match the existing stain but painters couldn't. I ended up having to paint it a Benjamin Moore color called Crisp Khaki that I've ended up liking. I'll attach a couple of pictures.

Bonjour, Beautiful ceiling. Gyprock and paint, a fresh white (BM oxford white CC-30) and if you want to do the walls a the same time (BM silver song 1557) would make your amazing stone wall stand out.

Why not paint the lower portion the same color as the walls and leave the highest area stained and alone and then decide if you want to restrain the highest part of the ceiling? Staining that whole space is time consuming and costly. If you have the cash and prefer to stain it go very light neutral tone ... No yellow or red as mentioned previously as that combo creates the orange effect you want to avoid!
