I would get the new appliances and then choose some paint for the walls. The cabinest are fine. If I were going to change anything, I would change the floor.

It's time for a paint color and not knowing what is in adjoining rooms it's difficult to speculate on what that color might be. But for a WOW factor, it must be a fairly strong one. A limey green comes to mind, or a coral color.
Would either color range work with what's nearby?

I would first get the appliances then paint. A new backsplash would make a huge difference!!! I would leave the cabinets like everyone else said. :)

I agree that I would keep the cabinets, and I also agree that I would put in a new backsplash. You could always change the hardware on the cabinets and I would consider pairing the walls a deep colour, maybe a Herbs De Province by Benjamin Moore.

Paint would really help. How about under-counter lighting!

White appliances are coming back strong--before you buy stainless next year, check to see where trend is. Of course, if you love stainless, then it doesn't matter what is trending.

I'll be the heretic. If your coastal style consists of blue and green and white and gray - cool colors and white, then you do need to paint this kitchen because its warm tones will never read coastal nor allow your home to flow. p.s. i do think they are nice :-)

Getting rid of the white appliances and white walls will do a lot to make the casework and granite flow here, but if you love a classic white kitchen, why expend $ on stainless - white appliances in your built in things for a coastal feel always would look nice and you can change as you need to change them instead of doing that first and getting no visual return. Problem you have is that your granite would not do well with white cabinets at all and that is a very expensive change. So I say, paint the cabinets but use a classic drabware tone that works with your granite.

Then you could put a coastal blue on the wall, add a fresh clean white backsplash and immediately give the house the coastal feel you are looking for. As for the cherry toned floor, it probably looks great everywhere else, but here it fights with the granite. Lay out diamonds, and paint the kitchen and breakfast room floor in a diamond pattern of canvas tan and trim white - then shellac - that is a coastal approach and this is your house. It's only paint. Search drabware and martha stewart if you want to see the history behind using these shades on casework - it is very new england coastal.

I think you could paint the door a nice coastal color to give the room more color after painting the walls. I think the floor is what throws the room off.

Everyone had great input. The most important factor is lighting. Try some pendants over your island there. As well as under cabinet lighting. Change the hardware and use a back splash tile made of blue glass tiles. Paint the walls a contrasting color and the countertops should also contrast the cabinet colors. I too say don't change the cabinets. Unlike many, I'm not a ss fan. However I'm not a white fan either, black, panels, or another color!

I'd say your kitchen needs bling! And not from STUFF, but from color on the walls, shiny backsplash, hardware on the cabinets and lighting! Get some great lights!!

Wow everyone has great ideas I would have never of thought of! One problem I don.tt think I can change the floor it is open to the living and diningroom. What if I put down a area rug in the kitchen? any ideas?

Rug in kitchen is fine - use and indoor / outdoor one you can hose off / use dishwashing liquid and a push broom to clean / leave outdoors to dry. Start with a coastal blue green on the wall like sw watery and that will even help the white appliances look better.

well... coastal blue and white cabinets would be a fine combination but that is not what you have here. You have warm tones on the cabinets and granite and floor, so unless you are up to redoing the whole kitchen I do not think you can bring in cool blue tones. Coastal does not have to be blue though, you can bring coastal feel with the pale warm grey on the walls, add some modern coolness with steel appliances and hardware, and add some navy or cobalt nautical touch with a bowl or a vase if you must.

Stainless appliance painting cabinets is not good usually chip. Put stainless knobs, and paint. A gray blue shade would give it a modern look.

Do not put anything on top of cabinets it's dated .

If it were me, I would first paint the ceiling a dark modern colour, then the door wall with something lighter and follow Susan Ortiz advice for the color of the door and then look back and see what's after that; I guaranty a WOW factor for sure.

Check some out and bring home. The only way to see what looks best. You might look for paint color first. Then go from there. A bit of color would cheer it up.

I think your cabinet finish is nice. Your counter is a bit low contrast against the cabinet wood,so you need to bump up the contrast other ways. Can you add lighting? If so you can get the contrast with darker walls, black or black stainless appliances, and a bright (loud) piece of art and bright finish hardware And a pendant over the sink. I don’t think the red tones in the floor work with the other tones, but a single photo could be deceiving.

I think the reason there is talk about replacing the cabinets is because the doors are not full face, indicating they are builders quality. but other finish changes will really minimize the effect of the smaller door fronts.
