This room has a hodge podge of items! How can I make these items work?

Painting everything white will help with cohesion. Take the big mirror off of the dresser and replace with a funky round mirror hung on the wall. Replace or paint (as in the example below) the knobs and pulls on the nightstand and dresser. A new wall color will make a big impact if the budget allows, and replacing the storage baskets with a neutral wicker will help as well.

Thank you for your ideas! I think taking off that mirror would def. be an improvement! I would really like to paint her furniture a silver color w/ some glass knobs. I like the bright colors that I already have, I just need to figure out how to make it all work. I really don't have the money to do a big renovation.

Our whole house is painted this color. I am going to keep the walls this color, since our house is for sale.

You would probably like a room that grows with your daughter then I will try to find something that works for her . I was looking at the sheers that are on the window by the way :)

    Okay here is the idea
I would begin by painting the walls ,then i would try to accomplish something like this ,you don't need t o purchase things all at once if you cannot ,one thing at the time will be a fun task to accomplish and the end results would be stunning ,at least I think so.
    Here is the picture

for the shelves ,buy letters and paint them to accomplish this

She likes the bright colors...I just want it to look more put together for her.
I think the long - outdated shelving needs to go! That would probably help to open the room up.
Agreed. I thought from the picture that the storage baskets were red and green and the bedspread was pink, but if the the baskets match the spread, they're fine the way they are.
Wow! I really like that bedroom. That is something she would love to have! The only problem is we are selling this house so I want to spend as little as possible.
I think that would be way too much silver. Silver and white are a nice combo, with pastels. Brights bounce off of black better in my opinion.

Regardless, I'd pick two prints and two solids you love and stick with only that in this room, and ensure the cabinet hardware matches. I'd remove the mirror and maybe frame fabric that matches.

The baskets are bright red and green - They actually match the bedspread! I have had the bed on the opposite wall and it seems to have more foot room this way.

That looks good w/ the black...maybe I should consider that. I am willing to paint this furniture since we will probably have it for many years...I just want to find the right colors.

she has a big enough closet that you could put the dresser inside or get rid of it alltogether and store those items in her closet then put the tv on the dresser if you decide to take off the mirror
  • 13 years ago
If I painted all the furniture black...what hardware? Glass?
How old is your daughter? I love glass knobs, but my ten year old has her own ideas now. Do you have a realtor? I'd consider eliminating any furniture that's not needed to ensure your home appears spacious, and therefore sells.

If the goal is really to get your home ready for sale then you need to declutter. Put the play set and the basket with the blankets out of site and make the closet accessible again. And you are right about the high shelving- it is not very functional and needs to go. If there are any other non essential items you can pack away, like maybe the tall white bookcase, the larger this room will feel and it will be more appealing to potential buyers.

I made her closet into a hideaway....let me show you...

We have a realtor. I have been trying to de-clutter as much as I can, trust me. I have a lot less in that room from before. Maybe the tall book case should go, but then I don't know where to put all those books. Every closet in my house is full!!:) I can't squeeze anything else in them. LOL

If you don't want to paint, I'd leave the shelf! Removing it will result in some repairs. If you plan on leaving it, utilize it by showcasing a collection of one thing, like board games or your daughter's framed artwork. Give buyers an idea of what they could do with the room. Another thing is to leave accessable play things in the room for buyer's children. The kids won't remember the house that had no toys, but will love the room they wanted to play in.

I think I will go ahead and try to get the shelving and bookcase out ASAP...and see what that looks like!
I though by hide away she meant she was using it to store items decluttered from around the house. It should either be that, or actually staged as a bedroom closet with some clothes hanging, or you could move the white dresser in there. Right now the impression is you have a lack of storage space.

Susan: That's a good idea too. That shelving in that picture looks really good. Our poor shelving is outdated...maybe if I did keep it I could paint the white brackets the color of the wall?
didnt realize house was for sale and OMG I love the hideaway !!!!!!
The closet was extremely packed w/ clothes and toys before. It looks better since I have removed them.

Your house is for sale, and your family has to live there while it is for sale. The room is stunningly neat for a small girl's room! The way to make these pieces look less hodge podgey is to paint them all the same color. That's a lot of work considering your are moving, so I would not bother doing it until after you move.

If I were you, I would replace the missing red knob on the white dresser, put some clothes back in the closet after getting rid of the small bench that is there now, remove the sparkly green curtains (unless your daughter absolutely thinks they are the greatest things in her room ever), remove the upper shelf that runs around the room, take down the dangly stuff on the mirror. Fixing missing pieces is important because missing pieces signal neglected repairs, a red flag to buyers. Put the original knobs back on the folding doors to the closet. This will all cost you nothing except a few hours of time and some additional paint to cover holes where the shelf hardware was.

Many kids' rooms don't need so much storage furniture. Your situation may be different from most people's, of course. You may want to do another decluttering. Since you mention your other closets are also full, perhaps taking another look at them would help you achieve your goal of selling the house. Leaving at least one-third of the space empty in a closet is a great way to show buyers that the house has excellent storage space. The less you have, the less you have to move, too.

Yes glass would be nice or if you like something a bit different and fun perhaps you might like something like these

Darcy is a pro stager! Maybe she will see your post or you could re-post it as "Need help to stage my daughter's room." You've said the paint is a given & runs through the house. While I love this bed, it looks like a full size. If you have or can borrow a twin size it will make a huge difference. Even just mattresses on a frame. It looks like the window is centered & you could place the bed under it with solid white panels at the window. Consider placing the tall bookshelf on one side of the bed, but placing the cubby-shelves inside the closet (and hang some clothing there). People love solid white bedding, so go to Walmart & get a fluffy comforter for use when you have to take pix, have an open house or showings. I'd leave the shelves & stage them with just a few items, like a stuffed animal, doll, books or a game. No more than 5 items on each wall. Pier One or Ikea have lovely inexpensive white paper hanging lamps. You have to show the house to people who may have a teenaged son or just need a guest room. Good luck to you & your family!

I would get rid of the night stand and turn the shelf to the left of it clock wise and add a few pillows use it as sitting area as well as night table and storage then you could move the table and chairs into the corner.
