The rug under the coffee table only to "me" just doesn't look as nice.

I like the way the fringed rug looks, size color and pattern. I know they always talk about "rug rules" but I've seen tons of spaces where smaller rugs without all the furniture on it looks good. Especially with your space, it doesn't need to follow traditional rules IMO. I love your cozy, eclectic inviting home. Really enjoying seeing your transformation with your new pieces :-)

Justerillyn - thanks for the diagram. Here's one of my own, with a 6x8 rug, which I think is about what you would have in your drawing - and that 6xx8 is only long enough for the chair's front legs, not for the entire chair.

While the rug would *technically* fit - the corner of the rug would jut into the path where the dining table is, leaving a path of only about 18". For reference, each square on the grid is 6". It seems like a tripping hazard that I'd be in the path of 17 times an hour.

Delilah, thanks. I'll keep looking. The current fringed rug is nice, but it's really thin, and doesn't lay flat. I think I need a more substantial rug, and one that's just a little bit bigger (not to mention no fringe.)

Hi Carrie, yes I see what you mean. While you probably won't trip you might wear that corner down. So, again I go back to the antique and semi antique because they are most always odd sizes. This one probably isn't wide enough and could be a tic shorter 5.3 x 7.10 (or is it?) but it's only at $102.58 so far on eBay. It does have a shipping cost though.

Thank you, justerrillyn. I think the ideal size is 6" x 4 or 5. If I want to get front legs of both sofa & chairs under the rug, but not sticking out much beyond, I think I can get away with 6x6. Tricky! Oh, I'm a tripper - I'd be tripping on that corner.

I'll keep an eye out. Some of the cheaper semi or antique rugs do not state if they have been cleaned so that is also something I would look out for and ask about if not in discription. And, as you know some rugs hold their value or even increase in value so not a bad investment.

I did see some in a 5.3 x 6 size but they were not right for your room. Your rug is out there.

Oh me O my O ...I want to go there. Have fun! Don't forget your tape measure. If the rugs look clean with no smell but haven't been professionally cleaned there is some negotiating right there. And, I wouldn't worry about a small amount of dye patina if the price is great because sometimes that adds to the charm. More negotiating there as well. Gee, I just knocked off $500 on the imaginary rug lol.

Also check Wayfair, type in Clearance rugs. You may like some of the Ikat drapes, tons of them online with every type of print and colors.

I really like your sofa. Another vote for no round and no tiny rugs. Here's one that I think is pretty and the price is right!

I think I see what you mean, but think I'd try it pulled away from the fireplace where it wouldn't be so visible and pulled out about a foot on the side of the sofa to show the pattern. Only if you loved it, of course, but I'm sure the return process for Overstock is relatively painless.

Juster- thanks! That's really helpful! I think my optimal size is really 6x5, or even 6x6... just to go with the biggest rug that won't be too big. I'm trying to hold out... 4x6 would work, and if I find one nice and inexpensive, I may go for it.

Yes, just an idea. You could also layer a solid color flat weave rug underneath on the fireplace side (or even sea grass - cheap) for more texture, or if the lack of rug there bothered.

Attached is a photo of a rug I like, dimensions 5x6'3, and those dimensions I've taped out on the floor. I can move the rug back and forth front and back a few inches. If I keep it as is, I can just have front legs of both sofa and chairs on the rug.

ps: Justerrilynn - I actually really like that "long shot" auction rug you posted. I am a little worried that it would overwhelm the space, with my patterned pillows and artwork - it might be a bit too much color - but I really like it a lot!

That could look nice! And, if it's too matchy you could tidy up the fringe of that little red & blue rug and layer under the coffee table (artsy cool).

Hey, you never did show us your color palette plan for your decorating. You have yellow walls and a red/coral/ sofa with possible close to matching rug, what's the rest? Any of these close? What are your accent colors? You will have to substitute your sofa colors for the more orange shades.

It could be a little too matchy matchy. However, Carrie seems to be afraid of more color? And, finding a rug size is a major problem. She might have to layer. I love layered rugs but not sure if it would be a little much in such a small space. I was thinking she could tidy up the fringe on that little blue & red rug and use that on top and under the coffee table. But, don't know.

I don't tend to be a matchy-matchy kind of girl, and I'm pretty sure that I'm not generally afraid of color, but it's such a small space and I am concerned that introducing too many colors could be a bad idea.

Here's my LR right now.

I really really like the blue color in the rug in your room. I think you can make your latest rug pick work by adding some of that blue somewhere and some of the yellow wall color into pillows on the wood chairs. So, your sofa will still shine when you add your accent colors.

Carrie, the latest rug is too similar to the sofa. The rug and sofa will each make the other less unique, I'm afraid. But of course, YMMV.

Thank you, everyone. I did decide to order that rug. I talked to my artist-friend-with-the-lovely-house, and she loved it, and said it was -by far - her favorite of the ones I've shared with her. I also went with her advice - dark color, subtle, small, overall pattern. We'll see. It is returnable, and new, and the seller has thousands of reviews.

Juster - funny you mention the blue color. Up until recently, I had blue bottles in my transom, I just took them down a couple weeks ago for painting, but I'm still waiting for the painters to come back & finish the job. Look in the upper left of the photo (that's my old door, which has since been replaced.)

The new rug does have some navy in it as well, and I could add some blue here and there. So, keeping fingers crossed. I think the fairly wide border design will keep the red from overwhelming, and, much of the red-ist part will be under the coffee table.

It can work and I hope it does! In the mockup with your soon to be new rug you can easily see how that color scheme with a few carefully picked pillows does in fact work. You might even try that cool little rug as a layer...or not. Love your bottle collection up there. I hope you post when you are done with the room.
