That's what I would have guessed, or any number of the Chamaecyparis obtusa cultivars..

i think your spot on ...

there are many yellow tipped forms/versions of the Chamaecyparis obtusa family ...

some can winter burn in some parts of MI ... especially the first year or two after planting .....

but its worth trying one ... where are you.. more specifically???

ken

I am on the north end of Lake Orion.

Thanks Jalcon and Ken for you help. Ken, is the winter burn preventable, or is it just a fact of life that will correct itself once established with new growth?

I have three spots in full sun for these, but will probably start with just one to see how it survives and if the deer will leave it alone. I've had success with Bobbex deer repellent on peiris and some other shrubs. I will try it with this tree too. May look at some other evergreen to fill the last two spots. I've been eyeing picea orientalis 'firefly', but still not able to stomach the high cost. I haven't had the best luck finding a good local selection of the less typical evergreens.

Definitely use some kind of deer repellent, as my Chamaecyparis obtusa "crippsii" got murked pretty hard this past winter by deer...
