In my opinion you should use tile/stone/slab and apply to the wall all the way up to the ceiling, to add some color to the living room. Also, if it's a wood burning fireplace, you can create a hollow space under the bench to store the logs. If it's not a wood burning fireplace you may be able to remove the hearth (check your local building code) altogether and and then tile/stone/ slab the wall
