Relatively easy. Dig around and cut the roots. I've yanked a lot of them out with a truck and chain when I was doing garden makeovers.

My husband loves the truck and chain method of removing shrubs...LOL

Junipers and Mugo Pines planted alongside the driveway and entryway sidewalk are the one's I pulled out the most. Usually they were planted as if they weren't expected to grow larger. Both don't take to trimming very well when they grew larger. Pulling them out was a quick step in upgrading the garden. Forsythia usually went too.

I had one that was planted near a gas line, so I just cut it off at ground level. It wasn't huge, main trunk about 2-3". It tried to grow back, but I just cut the new growths off once and that was it.

I might leave it for this year. I like the Spring Colour but rest of year it looks decidedly blah. any thought on growing a type 3 clematis up through it during the summer?
