'Flame Creeper' is a very popular form of groundcover azalea and should be pretty widely available.

Yeah, that's the only lowish grower I've ever seen around here. It gets up to 3' tall, however. I'm looking for something like the diamant line. I found some Iiked better that were even lower growing on a UK site, which of course I didn't write down and can't find again. I'm just wondering which nursery near Bellevue might have a huge azalea section. My preferred nursery is Bellevue nursery, but of course the mega nurseries like Molback's and Wells have more variety.

Probably the flattest one is Rhododendron nakaharae.

Both good options. Are you near here? Any thoughts about a likely nursery? Maybe I'll just try Wells next weekend. It's less of an "event" than Molback's. Except the parking, of course.

Probably Wells has the best selection. Other than a specialist. By the way Sunset 5 lines up pretty well on maps with USDA 8 in western WA.

I'll check them out. I did see a Flame Creeper at Bellevue nursery and I think I have it confused. There's a red one all over the place here, but the one in BN was pinker and cooler in hue.

Yes - that was 17 years ago that I put that zone on there. I think Sunset calls us 8b, but if I remember correctly, I used zone 7 to be on the safe side since we're a bit higher and in a forest, so have about a 10 degree differential from the surrounding area. Or maybe I just couldn't read the map. Zone 7 is overdoing it, but I'm probably too lazy to fix it.

Has anyone tried the Gumpo Satsuki azaleas in the PNW? There is a Gumpo Pink and Gumpo White, both are very popular in the SE US.

Much sold here for years. But you definitely need the right spot for something so small and brittle. Same as with other dwarf rhododendrons.

Molbak's has 'Flame Creeper' in bloom this week. A couple of pink ones of an obviously different variety were mixed in with them. So maybe a source supplying local outlets this year has some incorrect stock scattered through what they are sending out, and that is what you saw earlier.
