Usually the decision is based on whatever energy source you have now because changing sources can be expensive. If you have a electric range now and assuming you have gas service to the house, then you'd have to run a gas line to the location. If you have gas now, you'd have to run a new electric circuit because electric ranges use 240 volts and gas ranges use 120 volts.

Those issues aside, I prefer gas mainly because it offers me more control than an electric range for stove top cooking. I haven't used an induction cooktop though.

Me thinks since he uses the term "cooker" and is in Birmingham, he is in England: 230 volts, 50 hertz. Other than that, replacing with what you already makes the most sense.
