Correct Pendant Height Placement

I have 8' ceilings and will have an 8' x 4' island after my kitchen renovation is complete. I want to place two 15" wide Visual Comfort Goodman pendants (photo attached) above my island. The overall height of the pendant is 42" which can be shortened to 28.75" by removing a rod and link. This was confirmed by my local lighting store who inquired with a Visual Comfort rep. My concern is that it will still hang too low with my 8' ceilings. It cannot be altered once purchased (rods vs. links). There will be 67.25" between the bottom of the pendant and the floor and 31.25" between the bottom of the pendant and the top of the counter. Blog sites state that the distance between the counter and bottom of the pendant ranges 28"-36". I would appreciate any feedback! Fingers crossed it will work!

The standard distance between a kitchen island and a pendant light placed above it is 30 to 36 inches. The exact distance can be customized to meet your individual needs but should be high enough that it does not obstruct the view of the tallest person to use the island. The standard distance is usually calculated from the top of the counter to the bottom of the light. Hence, this may work.... you might try the balloon method.... blow up a balloon(s) tie a string and hang them from the ceiling with a push pin to the height that you will have so you can better visualize.

Thanks. Wish my 8' ceilings weren't so limiting

8' is a lot less limiting when wanting to do pendants than 10 or more! Try the balloon thing and it will help you to visualize it all.

    Good luck!

The balloon thing thing is a good idea. Although 30-36 is rule of thumb sometimes for an island you want it a little higher!

Yes Annie.... this is true.... I find when the situation presents itself the best way is to try toe method mentioned as we don't know the height of the ppl and the island is a bit narrow..... so, a pinch higher may be best??

Thanks for the tips! The bottom of the pendant will hit my husband (6' 1") at his eyes--not ideal. Since the Goodman pendants are not adjustable after they're purchased like a chain link pendant due to the rods, it makes me second guess this particular pendant. They can be custom made to a certain height, but there will be a fee and I'm not certain what that height should even be. Maybe 72" from the floor??Looks like we need pendants that we can adjust once we get them in our space. Appreciate the feedback!

They are difficult pendants. There was another post not too long ago and she purchased 3 and was in a state because there was little adjusting with these. Unless you can trade your husband for a shorter version :)..... or go custom or another avenue you. Did you try the balloon thing as silly as it is it really gives a good perspective. I've never gone from the floor with pendants, but from the counter to the edge of the pendant light: as in the lowest area of the light. If the island was 5 or 6 feet deep it would not be a problem I don't believe. However at 4 feet they are close to you.

Lol! I've got 3 growing teenage boys too--would have to trade the whole crew in! ;) We didn't have a balloon, but I used a pizza box lid to help visualize the size. It definitely helped! For a small fee we were able to order an adjustable chain to use instead of the rods. At least I'll have an option when it comes time to hang them! Thanks again!

@chikmw I have just ordered these same pendants in the small size that should arrive this week. I am curious if your electrician was able to adjust the height of them or if you had to send back and have the height adjusted from the retailer. I think I could live with the 28.75 length which would hang 31.25 inches above my island, but am hoping that my electrician can make the adjustment. My ceilings are 8 feet also.

Hi-We did not custom order but were able to remove one rod and link from the medium sized pendant. I ordered a gold chain just in case they hung too low once we got them, but I really loved the look of the rod and was hopeful to still be able to use it. Thankfully, it was super easy to remove the extra rod and link! So our pendants hang 29.5” above our island which is perfect! I absolutely LOVE them!! So glad we went for it! I’ve attached a few pics for you to see what they look like shortened. Hope they work for you too!!

The other pic made them look really low so I’ve attached a pic from another angle to hopefully give you a better idea ;)

@chikmw They look wonderful! I really like the medium size - they are a statement piece in your beautiful kitchen! The small size I ordered arrived today. I am hoping that the electrician can make them work with one rod. The rod is the distinctive part of the pendant for me!

Love them. Did you try to match your cabinet color do them?

Thank you. I didn’t try to match. My cabinets and trim are painted BM White Dove, and my subway tile is white in comparison. But everything blends nicely!

Thank you! I still love them all these years later, and the height works with my tall sons who now range from 6’4”-6’2”!

How do you remove a section of the rod?

If I remember correctly, there was a link connecting the two rods, and it came

    off easily.

Yes, I do believe you are correct chikmw!

I have the small sized Goodman and just installed. Due to the limiting adjustment factor bc of the rods, mine are 34” above the countertop. They feel a “tiny” bit too high but there’s not much to do given that they are rods.

If I remember correctly, i ordered it through the local lighting store where I purchased the light. It was a gold chain, but I didn’t use it.
