Why would it make a difference for cleaning them?

I've been searching wood grain databases and wonder if the recessed pieces could be Jeffrey Pine? I figure these doors must be original to the house. Not sure what wood would have been commonly used for doors at that time.

I have a closet door like that in my house. Also trim to match in a hallway. Unfortunately my problem isn't with cleaning but with a cat that decided to use the soft pine trim as scratching posts.

Those doors are all wood, but the center panels are plywood, so in that sense the panels are veneer. This is commonly done, as such large expenses of solid wood would warp if not made of plywood. You'll notice how pronounced the grain is in many of these panels, which indicates that the surface is rotary cut veneer. This is not a bad thing, nor should it affect what you do with cleaning them up, except that you wouldn't want to sand the center panels heavily and risk going through the veneer. Alhough the other parts of the door could be veneered, given the age of those doors I suspect that they are solid wood.
