Very healthy plants. Thinned, yes... unless you are just growing them for the flowers. ;-) The best time to thin them is during the period between frost killing the tops, and new sprouts emerging - when you can eat anything not replanted. You can still separate them now, though, they are pretty tough to kill (even intentionally).
I have them growing wild, and also a named cultivar. The wild ones grow just about that thickly on their own...but in the places where they grow farther apart, the tubers get about 25% larger. It won't hurt them to leave them, and replant farther apart in the Fall when you harvest.
I have areas where I mow them regularly as they are encroaching into my lawn, and the tubers don't rot..just keep sprouting...so I don't believe cutting a few would cause them to rot. You may cause the opposite of what you want, though...in my experience cutting them causes them to sprout more.
Thanks for the additional info. I don't want more to come up so I will leave these alone and see how they do. I will heavily harvest in the fall and spread them out further apart with the ones I leave in ground.
