Either run a 3 wire (2 hots, neutral, and ground) from your switch location to your fan, or install a receiver/remote fan control. The receiver will install in the canopy of the fan, and the remote can either be wireless or wall mount in the switch box. The latter option will use your existing wiring.

what?? Running a 3rd wire from the wall switch to the ceiling is not possible. And it is a ceiling light, not a ceiling fan. I thought this would be simple!

They just say it's a 'ceiling light' not a fan with a light.

What are the colours of the wires (in the box and on the light)?

What is the make/brand of your light (in case it's something unique)?

When you say "I connected only 2 of the wires", what wires did you connect and what did you connect them too? Did you just do it randomly?

My bad, misunderstood fan for ceiling light (the 3 wires threw me off). And yes, it is possible to run a wire from the switch to the ceiling, but it may not be simple.

When you say you have a 2-wire electrical system, you probably mean 2-wires plus ground. As Greg asked, what are the colors of the three wires in the fixture? I suspect the third wire in the fixture is the ground (either green or bare), in which case, it should be connected to the green or bare wire coming up from the switch.
