You mixed wires from another circuit into this one. Keep flipping circuits until you find the one that turns these lights off. You're lucky you didn't get electrocuted when you messed with the live wires (or did you have the main breaker off when you were doing the wiring).

Without more details on what you did and what wires are in the various boxes, we can't help you further.

Thanks for the response. I'm not sure how it's possible that I mixed wires from a different circuit into this one, but that's what I surmised as well. (When I was doing the work, I didn't have the main breaker off, but I did have the switch to these lights off. At any rate, I was lucky.) So, I've since clicked through the breaker panel, turning off each switch until I found that these lights are now controlled by the breaker for our kitchen outlets (not the GFCI ones, just those below waste level away from water sources). Now, my question is, is there a problem with running these lights (and the combo fan unit) on that same circuit for the kitchen outlets? Thanks again for any advice you can offer.

You really need to figure out why it's being powered from a different circuit than you thought it was. If you've mixed wires from different circuits, that can be a very unsafe situation. So you can't just leave it as it is because "it works".

"Working" and "safe" are not the same thing.
