I just bought The President, and the plant is so robust that I cannot possibly cram it into my obelisk. My plan is to plant it in its permanent location, aiming the "leaning over" portion toward the sun, and then temporarily situate my obelisk adjacent to the overhanging foliage. I can enjoy the flowers the plant is now putting out. Then, at the right time, I will bite the bullet and cut the plant back as hard as I need to to position my obelisk over it. My guess is that I will have to cut the stems to approximately 20" at that time. I am not sure whether to cut it back after the first blooms have finished, or in early spring of 2018. Advice appreciated.
