Gritty Mix transfer/repot container size

Hello,

I have some gardenias and mediterranean plants in nursery pots that I plan to repot into Al's Gritty Mix. They are all close to or over three feet tall and tucked very snugly into 10" (3 gallon) pots. A couple of the gardenia pots are even bulging and splitting. It's my understanding that they should go into 12" pots now but I'm wondering if:

  • the longevity of the Gritty Mix warrants skipping a size (to a 14" or 7 gallon pot, for example) to reduce repotting
  • the root systems of the bulging gardenias seem large enough to warrant skipping a size

Thanks!
