All of my citrus ( 7 varieties) are in pots and 5 ft or less in height.

I would like to Mike. My largest are no more than 6' or so in their pots. I have 8" ceilings in most of my house, so that is a natural limit for mine.

I don't because I don't need to because so far they have fit into my house or greenhouse.

Hey Mikey just repotted my Minneola on the weekend I am guessing that it will be six inches from ceiling in the greenhouse come fall .

In my old house, (and during my abysmally ignorant stage) I had a mow and blow gardener who kept a lemon in my front yard pruned to a lollipop shape with a chain saw. He never let it grow beyond about 4 feet tall. That tree was unstoppable! It was covered with flowers and fruit so that it looked more white and yellow than green! It was plonked in the middle of some grass, and was watered by the lawn sprinkers! Go figure! I googled my address and from the street view it looks like it is still going strong!

I am working on getting all my trees in ground outside. I am able to espalier my seed grown tangerine and could with out to much trouble grow it to 15 feet using glass in the winter. All other trees I am working on low branches with a bushy shape over growing trees.

Hey, Mike! I do try to keep my citrus as compact as possible. However, my Pomelo and my variegated Eureka lemons have other ideas....they just want to grow up and up!

By the way, buddy, we're about to enter a 100F+ heatwave here in California!

Nick, do you keep them that way deliberately? Do you have lots of trees?

Bklyn. I feel the same way. If I had a greenhouse with tall ceilings or lived in an area I could keep them outside all year. I would let them grow as tall as they would like. Full though.

Josh, what's up? You do know that when you get a heatwave, mines breaks..I hate the 90's then I hate too cold too. My trees do lousy in very hot too. I am happy to say the temps are going to be ripe for good growth for the next few days here. Will you take your trees out from full sun on those days over 100?

Steve, I figured that. Yours seems to grow full and short.

Brian, you little sneak!! I had NO IDEA you even cared to try a Mango! You can grow that and tell me how it does, if it even gives you a fruit! If it does, I am going to get one faster than a shooting start buddy!! Nice tree too. So nice! I'll bet you are so happy to finally have them outside. Good for you..By the way, what most beautiful POT!!! I love red. I would of never thought a tree would look good in a red pot. Where did you get that? I almost looks like a clay pot spray painted that color. Nice!

Laura, I hear you. Then if they grew any taller that that, you would either have to get higher lights or ceiling lights or build taller windows! Nothing us worst to see all the nice beautiful leaves fall off during winter because of lack of light hitting that area of the tree. It's just awful!

Hey, Mike! I'm actually keeping my trees in filtered sunlight beneath my oak trees. I think they do better when they aren't stressed by the California heat. I'm also re-potting my trees into larger plastic containers, so I don't want the roots to cook. Here's a picture of my Moro blood orange, as compared to the Pomelo. I prune both of them for shape....but I have to really whack back the Pomelo multiple times per season....and it's still getting away from me!

Brian - mango!!!! Wow! Let us know how it grows. I tried one years ago with no success, but I know more now. In your greenhouse you may be able to pull it off.

Chainsaw pruning, that is scary. But look at it now!

I've seen crews doing crepe myrtle 'pruning' with weed whackers. I guess it works; I didn't come back to see the outcome.

I would have preferred getting short shrubby plants for efficient use of space, but I ended up with most of mine being lolipops - 12-18" of bare stem and then branching above.

The plant I've had for a year (meiwa kumquat) did not grow any new branches on this lower part of the stem, even after moving back outside this spring. I have picked up a few more new plants, and the shape is similar.

How do you fix this?? Because pruning any branch will cause branching only at that cut, not along the bare stem/trunk.

I think most of us probably want to grow a mango, too. I want to taste test a few varieties before I pick one. And there are tons to choose from, although I don't know how many do well in containers.

mikerno its intentional as I have 30 trees in a small back yard.

I do prune my trees, or shrubs, time to time. Mandarin has responded very well to pruning, it has around 10 branches and a couple of short branches it has pushed out without pruning. Those short ones grew only a couple of leaves and seized on growing. But I'll keep them, perhaps they'll start growing when I take the plant outside - next summer.

Lemon instead, has got only 3 branches - one of them has taken the role of a leader but I pruned it in half.

Calamondin was already a small shrub when I bought it and the growth pattenr seems to be bushy by its nature.

Other citruses are just small seedlings and therefore has not been pruned. Time will tell how they grow. Hope they survive here up north!

Mikey , Laura I thought I would give Mango a whirl this year . Would love to know from all of you are there lot's of nurseries around you selling tropical fruit tree's , this year here it's crazy just about everyone of them are selling tropical fruit tree's the real in thing this yr for sure .

Nick I have a microscopic yard too.

I try to pick bushier plants from the start, I haven't had to prune any of mine yet but when I do it will certainly be trying to keep them short and squat.

Nick your trees look great! I always like the look of them in the wine barrels, I can't wait for mine to be large enough to put them in some. I also felt like this picture was a where's Waldo of citrus pictures, I only counted 5 and I was like where is 6 until I found it.

Lovely trees Nick! Brian, I have a guava - have had it for years. The tree does well and grows guavas, but the squirrels beat me to them :-(

Laura poor you !!! What don't squirrel's like ? I hope that there not into Mangoes. Here Laura it's like a wild life sanctuary you name it we have it I actually have Cardinals and Robins nesting in my tree's so much for washing them . Laura are you trying to talk me into trying a guava lol :) Laura thought that you might like this pic of my calamondin tree.
