We need to know where you live, what horticultural zone you garden in. What direction does the house face? Is it shaded in summertime? That said, consider adding bricks to each side of the entry sidewalk to widen it. If you are brave, you could replace the plot next to the driveway with a garden of native plants. Probably nothing too tall.

Is the front of the house in shade most of the time, or is just the side next to the driveway? That side looks like it might be in shade most of the day, especially when the trees leaf out. Plant selection depends on the light it will get.

I agree with yvonnecmartin that more info is needed before we can comment about possible plants, but I wonder if you need a path of some sort from the driveway to the front door? If so, that could define a planting area between the new path and the house.

Be really sure about the side of the yard next to the drivway. You don't want full-sun plants there if they won't get 6 hrs of mid-day sun.

Definitely make your beds wider--three feet probably. Keep a space to walk next to he house to tend the plants. It seems that your aren't into gardening, so I suggest a variety of shrubs. Some evergreen, some flowering. Nothing that grows too tall. Then mix this or front this with perennials. For example, sedum Autum Joy is a nice plant that has great seedheads in winter. Do you know what you have now? Maybe they could be pruned to be rejuvinated.

As to the shape of the beds, try drawing out a plan on paper--it looks as if the house is set back a little next to the driveway, so this could be a deeper bed.

As to plants, you might look at Prairie Nursery in Wisconsin for native plants. They even sell pre-planned gardens.

Great House! Add window grilles to your windows and it will totally transform the front. Use evergreen shrubs around the foundation so that you wont have bare branches up near the front during winter which is half of the year. This house must have a picket fence. Love it.

When we create a landscape design we ask clients some of the following: Do you have a certain garden style you prefer? What feeling are you going for...casual, formal, etc.? What colors do you like/dislike? What plants do you like/dislike? And more! Without actual dimensions for your front yard it's a little difficult to really recommend specific plants. A plan is really the right way to go when you are making an investment in your property.
