An upholstered dining banquet would also be nice.

Take away the arm chairs, then add 2 or 4 upholstered chairs w/skirts to lessen the "leg" look and soften your room...love the Scandinavian look above.....I would do a solid white or neutral.....also I think the light fixture and lovely art work needs to be lowered......great room

Try adding an alert on ebay and Craigslist. You can also view photos of local estate sales online. I'm trying to match a vintage chair myself so I can relate to the struggles of trying to match a chair. However, as soon as you settle you'll find it.

Great Ideas!! I am tired of having to bring in "other" chairs when I have more guests! I really appreciate the idea of a bench or banquet ( tho' I'll have to google "banquet" ;) )
I never considered my DR to be "leggy"...hmm, maybe if I stand in there long enough the effect will transfer to me!
So now if I am adding upholstery and/or fabric......what colour?
Should the wood on the bench or other piece be dark? I think it should be different than the light ash but what would work?

There have been a number of debates on the threads about how comfortable a bench is for people to sit on for a long time (ie a long dinner). I would try it out temporarily for a while before committing long term for your own peace of mind.

Just look for two chairs or a bench that you love. Everything doesn't have to match; I like mixing upholstery with wood. You might find something contemporary which echoes the Queen Anne look. Then reupholster your original chairs to coordinate with the new chairs. Good luck.

You are all so clever! I googled "banquette" and found a couple I like. I put this bench from my foyer on one side to see how it might look. What do you think?
I like the look of the built in banquette against the wall but then my table would not be centred, right?

Check out Ballard Design and have a pair of upholstered parson's chairs done with a skirt and set them elsewhere in the dining room. When you need the extra chairs pulls them into the center sides of the dining table for immediate use then but them back against the walls when you are done with the party in the room.
