Sweet corn germination

OK, let me lead off by saying that I've been gardening for over 50 years and own a farm so I think I know a little bit about making things sprout and grow. This year, I'm somewhat "flummoxed" at my inability to get sweet corn to sprout? Five rows, fourty feet long spaced 30-32" apart. I use a garden seeder, has a hopper, "shoe" (for all you old farmers out there) which is changed depending on type of seed, adjustable depth, opens furrow, drops seed, closes furrow with a drag chain, then a packer wheel firms it up, also has a furrow marker to mark the next row. First planting was Ambrosia, planted the same day I planted Blue Lake Bush beans, beans flourished, about 4 kernels sprouted..... Next planting, forget the varietal, one of the bi colors anyway, got about 7 kernels sprouted this time. Changed where I purchased the seed for the second one. Planting depth was 1" which I've always used unless it's a very dry year, then I'll go deeper. It's my regular garden patch, 50X70 and everything is in rotation and has been in use for over twenty years. Have time to try again, probably will, as I enjoy puttering in the garden and making neighbors happy.

Has anyone had this experience this year? We didn't have a winter last year. e.g. Didn't plow or snowblow once all winter and was feeding my honeybees in January, which I've never done or heard of in this climate, Zone 7. Don't see how a very mild winter could affect corn germination.
