Unknown pest?

Hi all! Lately I've noticed some mysterious tiny white bugs crawling around my succulents and on the soil. They seem to be spreading from pot to pot, and are present in my plants that are in bagged soil as well as those in gritty mix.

I've tried spraying with diluted rubbing alcohol but it did not seem to be effective.

They are too small to capture in a photo with my phone, but they're white, a minuscule fraction of an inch, they move around quickly on soil and plant, and they do not fly. I have not noticed much, if any, damage on the plants where they are, but it's fairly recent so I don't know if it might be a slower acting process.

If anyone knows what they might be and/or how to get rid of them, I'll greatly appreciate any help!

Thanks,

Aleena

Hmmmm, that's not much to go on, maybe someone else will know. Wild guess, but could it be whitefly?

Springtails? Get some of those sticky yellow card traps, assume you have them wherever you are located, and place them on the soil. They're used here in U.K. for catching glasshouse whiteflies but will catch anything that treads on them.

Lisa, I don't think they are whiteflies- I looked those up and it doesn't seem to match very well. Thanks though!

Gill- seems like it might be springtails- I looked them up and they're closer matching in description than anything I've found thus far. I'll try those traps! I've used them before for fungus gnats and it's been pretty successful. Thanks!

Try to figure out why there are so many. Springtails are commonly found in compost, so maybe there is too much organic matter around? Also, maybe some residual water sitting in saucers. They like similar conditions as fungus gnats. The bagged soil could have been wet/moist and maybe they came with it. But unless they liked conditions, there would not be so many.

    Are your plants indoors?

Yep, they are indoors under a grow light.

I water the gritty mix plants over the sink and let them drain out to try not to let water sit in saucers, but sometimes excess will be there that drains out more slowly I guess?

I'm in the process of moving pretty much all of my succulents over to gritty mix, so there's still regular CS soil in several pots. I'm sure that would provide a nice environment for them, despite infrequent watering.

Do they look similar to these little guys I've found? Although I haven't received confirmation on them, I'm thinking they're either springtails or soil mites (all found in plants with gritty mix)

Those couldn't be mealybugs, could they?

EHH824, from what I can tell they look quite similar to what I have! Have you tried anything to get rid of them yet?

Succulentss, i don't think they're mealybugs- no telltale white fuzz on anything and the guy in your photo looks larger and more leggy than the ones I have

Are we talking tiny as in milimeters or tiny as in one or two hundred microns? Fungus gnat larvae?

The little guys inhabiting my gritty mix have been mostly white/tan, extremely small (able to be seen with naked eye, but loupe is extremely helpful to get close up view). I'd estimate millimeters and shy away from them being FG larvae. My guess - some type of soil mites. Never once seen them above the soils surface or on leaves; they just crawl relatively swiftly around the containers rim, sides, and in the saucer. Thing is, I cannot tell if they're doing any damage; plants are strong yet it makes me wonder if they'd be growing even stronger without these insects around their root zone.

I have still not applied any insecticides to the pots. Recently moved all my plants outdoors, so I'll likely do a dunk/drench application once fall rolls around or any ill effects become apparent.

It may be a crazy thought but I'm hypothesizing that perhaps they arrive with the mannopro granite I use. My mix is just 50-50 granite/turface... After doing some research, grain mites have become another suspect - seeing as how the granite is sold as a feed product and may originate from a location with these pests. They look awfully similar....

    Thanks all!

This is a pretty good rundown of mealies: Planet Natural

I've bought from them and like that company. They're having a sale now too.

Maybe because its in gritty mix, the "dew" isn't as noticeable, but they can make a mess (slowly). I've seen some nightmares in commercial settings. I've fought and lost against them (and scale and powdery mildew).
