Sharp Microwave Drawer

Hi Everyone! I've been reading up on the Sharp microwave drawer and think I've read every post. However, most of the posts are old. I'm building a new home and want to put the microwave in my island. I love the idea of the drawer and was almost sold on it reading all the reviews on here. But then, I realized that you all have the older version. They have the newer version which doesn't have that handle and the controls are hidden until you open up the drawer and it slants upward at an angle so that you can see it. It sounds great! But, the reviews on Amazon have not been that great. Also, I read somewhere on here that there were some venting and steam issues and wondered if that has been resolved. My cabinets will be the full overlay, not the inset kind. Does anyone on here have the newer version of the Sharp microwave drawer? If you do, how has it worked out for you? Any problems with steam and water dripping down the cabinet? Thanks!

I have the new version and no issues. I really like it a lot.

Thank you! How long have you had it? I'm pretty sure I want it. I'm just nervous about the venting issue. I saw the older model where the vents were in the bottom front. I don't see any vents in the newer model.

Thank you so much! You guys rock! I'm really sold on it. I spent an exhausting day today looking at new appliances for my kitchen and am more confused than ever. LOL! I think at least I know that I will get the microwave drawer. I just need to go to a showroom to see it in person so I can feel and touch. Yeah, I'm nuts that way. Thanks again!

Know that the only difference between the 30" size and 24" size is the kit they add to the 30". The 30" is basically a built out 24"

I had the older version in my condo and will be getting the newer version for my new build.

Yep. I did read that but thanks for reminding me. I am going to definitely get the 24" one.

Just wondering what you decided and how you like it? I'm trying to pick out a new one now and had the same questions you did!

I will be moving into my new house in two to three weeks. I have not tried it yet. I did order one and it will be installed next week. Once I get into my home and try it out, I will let you know.

Definitely! And good luck with the move- so exciting!

Thank you! We’re so excited and can’t wait. We sold our house in October and have been living with friends. The house is about three weeks over due. Hopefully that is all.

I am going to get one too! I almost bought the Jenn-Air version because I could throw it into my appliance package and get the builder's discount, but it was the same price as the Sharp and I actually like the idea of the little flip down control. So Sharp it is!

I just finished my kitchen and we've been using the newer Sharp microwave drawer in our island for about a month. We love it. It's my kids' (4 teen/preteen boys) favorite thing about the new kitchen. No venting issues that I've seen.

love the flip down control thing

I've got the newer one and have been using it for over a year. Love it. It vents out the front just like the old ones, however you have to get your face right in front of it to even notice that it is venting. I would buy it with confidence.

Ours sucked. Burnt up within three months of being installed. Took forever to get replacement with Sharp. Finally got new one and it does not heat and the front panel is falling off. Still waiting on third. It is the same one you are looking at. There is a whole discussion on these in the design dilemma section.

Dream house - I’ve heard about the burnout problem but thought that was more with the older models. Was yours covered by warranty? Did it do any damage to your cabinets?

No it was new, purchased in end of April 2017, installed in July of 2017. Fire on Oct 24, 2017. No cabinet damaged, thank goodness!! I was melting butter in Pyrex, 12 seconds in it made a weird rattling noise then all this black smoke started pouring out. I stood there in a bit of a panic about to dial 911 (that’s how thick the smoke was). Had extinguisher on hand and decided to open drawer, cleared smoke out and well butter was still cold. It was so weird. Glad it happened to me and not one of the kids. I have had some bad luck with almost all my new appliances but this one wins for the worst and the worst customer service.

I've been in my new house for two weeks now and we love our Sharp Microwave drawer. It works beautifully. I guess time will tell if it holds up.
