How high is the back? Will an inch make a difference and make the back seem low?

Pal, I was hoping you'd chime in. That is a good point about the back. It is not a high back, so, yes, it could be low if the cushions are higher. Both of us are fairly short, so the lower seating is not really an issue.

It's so nice and slinky with the thin cushion. But I don't know if an inch would be obviously less slinky.

You can always test the back height by sticking a bunch of books under the cushions and see if it feels like the back is too low. Or borrow a cushion from another piece of furniture if you've got one.

Unfortunately, it's already at the upholsterer which is about 40 minutes away, so it's not possible for me to measure and test out something else. It's not uncomfortable for us the way it was. At this point I think I am inclined to keep it thinner. ???

Since it was originally designed to be thinner, I think 3" is the better choice.

I'd stay with the original look. Everything 's going to get lifted and tightened up when they reupholster plus you're getting new foam. That extra inch might make more of a difference than you think. Just guessing.

They said they could re-wrap the old cushions but since they were actually a little uneven I'd probably prefer to get new vs. 60 y.o. foam. New cushions are $100 more.

Personally, I would stick with the 3", as it looks like it is proportional to the front just below the cushions. Good foam with dacron covering the foam should make it comfortable. Please post photos when it's done. Would love to see it.

There are different grades of foam - make sure you get something that will hold up.

I agree about the foam. I requested latex foam because I prefer how it feels and don't want the off-gassing of the fake stuff, but it was a LOT more than $100 (but mine is a sectional). Yours might have latex in it now, considering the age.

There's actually wood trim on the arms (teak? cherry?). I believe the sofa is mid-century Drexel, but I am not sure if there is a tag on it. We bought the sofa and the credenza from an estate auction near my school where the entire house was furnished in Drexel Counterpoint when it was built in 1959, and it had never left the house. Wished I could have taken it all!

I still have the same rug but different coffee table, This little kitty has also crossed the rainbow bridge. :(

Wanted to stay with greens or browns.

If it's not too late, you could request that the upholsterer save any manufacturer tag(s) that they come across when they take the materials off.

There was not tag. Was probably removed at some point. They said the wood is teak and just to put a little mineral oil on it now and then, being careful to avoid the fabric. Maybe just use a soft cloth or finger from a glove.

Wonderful! I think you must have the fastest upholsterer ever. Can't have been an easy job to match the pattern in so many places, but it looks great.

Thanks, everyone! Oh yeah, definitely love it!! I bought the fabric through a neighbor on Nextdoor who has an eBay store, and then they have an upholsterer they work with. This is apparently a slower time and they get busy before the holidays. Works out good for me because I am off school and then we are hosting family and friends for an NFL game in September.

Here are the furniture protectors. The Furniture Defender and then some Sticky Paws tape and then the strips. The Defender are clear plastic that go around the corners.

I thought I'd maybe treat myself to a new rug, but I like the rugs with it. We are due for a cleaning with Stanley Steemer. I think we need to get the Lane Acclaim end tables that match the coffee table and then maybe try to talk DH into a new modern-looking recliner? Or maybe see how much to get recliner re-upholstered. We have a slipcover on it now.

Also have some fabrics, and I'd like to get some new accent pillows made.

The furniture defender really looks invisible like in the Amazon ad. I bought the 18 inch. They are a soft vinyl so they are pliable. Just warm them with water. So far the cats really haven't gone near the new sofa. Little girl kitty slept on a throw pillow as she often does. She's not the furniture scratcher, though; it's Halloween kitty and then the previous little kitty in the photo above.

I put a couple of the sticky paws on the front vertical arms near the wood trim. Otherwise, not sure yet where else I will put them. I put a small strip on the area above the furniture defender on the corners.

Apparently, this fabric is a magnet for long black cat hair. :) If that is the worst thing, I'll take it.

It looks like a brand-new sofa! And my compliments to the upholsterer on lining up the pattern, which, as Olychick pointed out, ain't easy. I followed the links to see what those products were, and they don't look nearly as tacky as I was picturing, though they would after I was done using them on all the places that need it in my house. :) (Being a life-long dog owner whose now the smitten owner of two awesome cats, I've a lot to learn about cat "stuff.") And btw, I'm sorry about the cat in your picture who's no longer with you. :( After all is said and done, we can replace the things our pet destroys, but there's no replacing the pet. It boggles my mind that not everyone thinks that way, but it is what it is.
