Flo Mangan....On left side of wall I have an alcove. Presently, have 1 bookcase & will be ordering another one, exactly the same. Agreed, setup of furniture just does not seem right. Also, wall color is off & need suggestions to make it more cohesive. Settee is presently situated to look out window @. Neighbor's siding! Will take pics of complete room so you can get idea of room. Thx

Having fun....Like your color scheme. Very nice. If I do end up painting these walls, thought I would wait for accents. Walls are SW Nomadic Desert.... The floor lamp is one that I previously had in another room, but doesn't seem correct size. Also, do think printer is a big pop, and need to find another location. Thought diff shades of blue might be a good accent color with white & gray.

Settee might be wrong in color as it has a green undertone with the gray.

Perhaps you could use settee in another room? A guest chair would work better. Move printer to other side of credenza so it isn't focal point when entering your room. The room is very small so don't over fill it. Without the settee, you could turn the desk and see out window instead of having your back to it. Good luck. Settee doesn't really need pillow(s).

i don't know i kinda like the settee in there. now blue it could become a couch of many pillows!

NIce beginning, keep at it. My ideas: make a functional seating area, add (or move around a small end table, and change the light shade on the floor lamp to round, yes a pillow or three, and some art over the settee. I might try the filing cabinet as an end table, if there is wall space. The collage would be better over the credenza, the printer needs to go in the closet. Each furniture piece seems to stand in isolation, try to group together.

Ok thx everyone for your suggestions. I am going to:
1. Find a different shade for floor lamp. Too square.
2. Taking back the settee & finding a chair. Grover had suggested that previously, and she is always spot on!
3. Moving printer but can't put in closet due to space & no electrical outlet.
4. Using one of the smaller pieces for future chair end table.
5. Any ideas on a ceiling light?
6. I know the room is small, but still want to order another bookcase. Just have too much stuff.
7. Would like to get new window treatments.

Ok. Good plan. Could you put a bookcase either side of credenza. That would make a nice visual coming into room. Then possibly angle desk and that would make space for chair. I will do a little layout for you. Bbl.

if you go with the idea of the window framed by the matching bookcases and don't have room for curtain panels, maybe sheers or cafe curtains (too informal?) to mute the view but still let in light >>

I like the teal pillow, but I'd add a few pillows in different shapes or sizes. I like the idea of adding one with a pattern that has white in it. Don't change the rug, it's not going out anytime soon .

I would choose your wall color based on rug.

I would go with a print for pillows also or several prints that have common colors like kalims with warm colors rather than cool. Maybe you could sit the printer on one of the shelves on a bookcase so it is not the center of attention. R ally go with a large piece of art for your focal piece furniture whichever you chose. If you do warm for your pillows, make sure to use some of those colors in the art. Or it would also be neat to use a large metal wall sculpture, something with texture. Of you want to do a one wall of various family photos, something like the metal work on another wall would work well.

Flo's layout #2 is perfect for that room. Gives you functionality and style. Remember less is more in design. a focal point is key to the room. Yours is the window, play it up. Good luck, ps why do you need curtains in an office? just a thought :)

No curtain is needed in this small space, in fact, I wouldn't advise it. A woven Roman Shade for light control would be perfect. Inside mount.

Update.... I did get rid of the settee. Was thinking of just purchasing this chair for the room from AllModern. I have another active dilemma: Suggestions on Window Treatments. Since I also need new window treatments for kitchen, thought the FL room should also co-ordinate with kitchen as house is set up where you have visibility in all 3 rooms. Present window treatments were already in the purchased home.

Must admit do not think pillow great,prefer wall art large rich splash of color or series of prints

I love the blue stripe curtain panels suggested by ital mover. I think you do need window treatments to soften the room, add color and keep the eyes on the curtains and away from the ugly view of the siding, I would add the sheers under the curtains though, to dilute that view.

Ok thx for responses.... I did get rid of settee. Still have not found a chair of interest. Had a rep over for window coverings but still indecisive on what to do. Always loved the HD Silhouettes but too pricey for the time being. Not too worried about finding a new floor lamp shade. Agreed-art is needed & still looking. Hopefully, will find a chair soon. I look at some of the beautiful pics on Houzz of completed rooms designed by pros & Interior Decorators. The furnishings are striking but I do not have the resources to find similar items.

May I suggest rather than add window treatments, screen the view from the outside? Add two or three large plants or small trees in front of the window.

Handle the space between the house and the perimeter fence as you would a long room, break it visually with a growing feature. You could even use large potted plants or trees if you don't want to add foundation or permanent plantings.

Depending on your growing zone you could enjoy spring or autumn color as well. A local nursery will have some ideas and it doesn't have to break the bank. I planted a group of three Pomegranate trees from a big box nursery to break the a view from long narrow side yard and tucked in a bird bath (on sale at Houzz *G*) or a pretty bench. Even in the winter the Poms are interesting. Plus late Summer/ early Autumn is an idea time to plant trees or shrubs.

Coming in late but will put my 2 cents in...have you considered enclosing window on both sides with bookcase over and below the window. There ar several examples on houzz....this would give you a full wall of storage which I totally understand..you might consider putting drawers instead of shelves under the window and find some other use for the small chest. You might be able to put printer on a shelf...again limiting number of small pieces. You can also mount light/lamps on bookcase putting most everything on One wall...which may allow you to hav larger size furniture in the room to balance storage wall. Again look at houzz examples on wall storage. Consider painting wall unit a light color to diminish wall unit...you might consider painting walls a pale color you are fond of and maybe white wall unit...some color that issserene to you sinc it seems this spot may be a place you will be spending some time in.

Just bought the chair yesterday & think it is a good fit for this room. What do you think? Also, found this companion picture. Now for the arrangement. My only option with the credenza is wall where it is presently located or move to wall where chair location is. Getting there slowly but I have realized decorating and placement takes time. Moved printer on other side of credenza so it did not pop so much upon entry of room.

I think you're room is looking much better, good job! Maybe a pillow for the chair that picks up a color from your artwork is all that's needed?

Did you get your window treatments for your other rooms figured out? If not consider woven shades to replace the blinds, and you can add light linen drapes to soften and elevate the look. This is not my idea... I'm stealing it fromHome Interiors with Ease

Regarding the window treatments: woven shades are awesome but to me they project the earthy look. I had 2 reps here for ideas and quotes. I have always loved the Silhouette shades by Hunter Douglas. Had an estimate close to $4.000 by HD including silhouettes & blackouts for bedrooms. The other individual I had over for estimate had previously made my window coverings for my other house. She now is a rep for Lafayette and suggested the Allure Roller Shade. Fell in love with the look, and estimate for approximately 15 windows: $3300.00. Houzz had many photos of the Allure Roller Shades. This is definitely look I was interested in. So many options in deciding colors, mechanisms, style, etc. Now I have to work on hubby.

The lighter pillow you chose later is better, needed to be a bright, light spot against the dark bench. The persyn who said to add a painting above the bench is also spot on. Or maybe a mirror with an interesting frame & sconces to each side. The room seems darkish & mirrors & lights off mirrors would brighten it up.

lots of ideas here but I am wondering why not add to the mid-century look that you have going with the desk and support furniture? ~as in pillow covers and artwork ~ I see the lamp is back? maybe had a better use in the other room? once you get the shelving units situated it will be a heavier look for the small room, good idea to try to incorporate the "mechanicals" into the shelving and at a level less conspicuous if you are concerned about what is visible from other room~ less IS more! No one has mentioned IKEA as a resource for inexpensive blinds. If in an area that does not need to be raised/lowered frequently why not!?

Instead of a large, single piece of generic artwork which to my eye always looks a bit staged and impersonal. Have you thought about gleaning some photos from your family albums, printing and framing them in the same size and color frames. Or if you have time glean yard sales for interesting frames. Spray paint them all the same color. Michael's always has frames on sale and so does Aaron's (if you are near either). Then hang them in a grouping. You can fill a large space for a small sum of money and rotate photos as you fancy. I do a whole wall of Christmas-y photos, then a wall of spring flowers, etc.

If you only have a B&W printer then do a black & white gallery...but if you can print color then the only limitation is your imagination! It's amazing what you can do with a cell phone camera and a printer and it's a personal touch.

Another late suggestion - A home office is usually difficult because you have to balance practical with design (not to mention the price on these things.) I struggle with the same issues in my home office. Some of the other suggestions I think are on spot. (1) Change lamp shade shape (2) use filing cabinet as a side table to make multiple use of a needed item (3) consider alternatives to block the view, unless it doesn't really matter to you (4) use non-generic art - something you love. It doesn't have to match everything else. In fact right now the room is too neutral. Since the rug can be expensive to replace, consider finding a pillow in the same design but with a pop of color. I've seen blue, green and even orange in several different places, even on discount carts. When you are ready to replace the rug all you might need is a different pillow. Even if you don't like that idea I would definitely go with some spot of color. Since you have such a neutral background this could be just about anything. Just find something you love and work with the color from there. It makes it a lot nicer to "go to work" when you are surrounded by beautiful things.

Hi everyone .... Thanking all of you. Below are my inspiration pics for this room. However, my room is getting to look "Heavy". Getting bummed out. Love my new leather chair but thinking black made not have been a good color choice. Moved the chair to the corner of room by the window. Moved the credenza where the settee was located. Also, ordered white roller shades for the windows.

I like the shades. If things are still feeling too dark after you get those, you could do a lighter wall color, like the light greige in your inspiration photo. Is the furniture placement working well for you? I'd love to see some art on the wall behind you. : )

Had to scroll back to remind myself what your rug looks like. Gray and cream, is that right? Those are neutrals, so you are not really restricted on what wall color could work. Any light neutral could work, or a light smokey blue (a few shades lighter than the blue in your artwork) could look great too.

Be sure to test the color(s) you're thinking about in that room to see how they look. Light colors are very affected by the ambient light and surroundings, so you have to check the color in your own space. Best way is to paint large swatches on a poster board and use some painters tape to tape it up in different places at different times of the day so you can make sure you like it. :-)

Thought I’d add my two cents... You need to try adding bright colors like orange and or fustian. Should be easy to find since they seem to be in this year.

The bold pattern of the rug completely overwhelms the room and makes it about the carpet. Dump the carpet and start over.

I agree the rug is fine and you can tie in a pillow by using white in a pattern with a color that you will also have in the artwork. Working with what you have an adding small pops interest with newer accessories is more cost effective for some of us!

Everything seems to be pretty generic. Your eyes are not flowing around the room, the two bookcases and the credenza need to be all on the same wall. the chair can stand alone , but truly if you want a pillow ,go bold. In your art work, go big and bold with color. Your rug is fine....as in generic. Which is fine you don't want your eyes to stop on the floor anyway . The chair will pop with a bold pillow that coordinates with the colors in the art work. I cant see the square lamp shade working , a round shade will be visually more pleasing . The use of color and accessories will tie all your design elements together for finished look.
