as a kitchen and bath designer, I would say "no". There is a good chance the top will crack. Not sure why you put a new countertop on a vanity that is lower than you would like, but I would just go ahead and get a new countertop to go with the new vanity.

Agree with PFF, take your time to remove, be patient. You can save it if you really want. depending on how they have been installed, remember not everyone uses glue, I run across vanity tops, counter tops, and butcher blocks, that are installed using caulk, or a variety of elastic type fillers.........many times as shocked as most.

Once you get it free, work on the top from the bottom on a work bench and free up the remaining portion of base. try a Coping saw or a thin long saw blade type of saw. I am not sure I would really use a sawzall. However, I have used them in the past to free up vanity tops after they have been removed.

The trick is driving progressively larger shims evenly around the perimeter edges. Start with a metal scraper. If the adhesive is continuous, see if you can get a Japanese pull saw between the cabinet and the bottom of the top. You're much more likely to crack stone or estone in removal than Corian.

Could the vendor who advised you that the glue would be a problem possibly have something to gain from you purchasing a new countertop? Just something to think about.

No doubt there's a profit motive behind the advice. It's the reason I thought the pros on houzz could shed some real light on the subject. Thank you! I'm attaching a photo of the vanity we want to replace and the current countertop.

That should be easy. Cut around the top/wall junction where the caulk is.

Look from underneath to see how it's attached - make sure no screws were used.

Carefully pry up a bit at a time.

You also may be able to remove the vanity and top as a unit, then work on separating the two.

I removed a similar vanity for resale when I got a new one. As long as you break the caulk seals, it shouldn't be too hard to remove it intact. Take your time and you'll get it done.
