I had that same problem with our previous granite and I'm really curious to see what people say about your inquiry. I just had new granite installed and don't want the same thing to happen.

I just checked my granite. It was installed 13 years ago and the knife block has sat in the same spot for 13 years too. There's no color difference.

My granite is Juparano Florenzio. It was sealed on installation and never since. It's a great stone and seems impervious to anything I'd placed on it.

I, as well was informed by several people, including here that I have a great stone (river white granite) but I feel like I'm constantly having issues with it!

the window is to the left above the area. The dish rack that I have is not fully situated on the granite. It does have about 1 cm of space underneath to allow light to enter (not sure If that is enough).

if the area has been protected from UV rays, which I agree it has, then how come the previous post said hers hasn't changed in color? I also have a knife block in a slightly darker area and I see no change in color.

i included a picture of the window and area to the right. You can clearly tell where the area is.

the discoloration I had was under a knife block next to the stovetop, not near a window, however there was also discoloration under the dish rack similar to what the op has observed and that area was close to a window.

Have you tried moving the dish rack and saw a change in color?

When we had granite, we never sealed it and I did notice, after a while, that parts of the counter that were heavily used got darker than others (like under the dish rack). It never bothered me but I'm sure if we had sealed the granite, it wouldn't have happened. Probably just water and oils.

I never moved the dish rack as this was really the only convenient spot for it, same with the knife block that we had. I wonder if the light areas under these objects are actually the original color and the dark areas are exposed to more light, water, oil etc so they darken. Mine was sealed when put in, then once more through the years, but certainly not as much as recommended.

Thanks! Ours was sealed as well and I have already sealed it once more. The dish rack has been in that spot for less than 6 months which is why I'm so concerned with this area.

Our granite was definitely lighter, probably close to the color you see under my dish rack. We've only had the granite in for a year this September.

No. I and some of the best restoration professionals won't touch a poultice job. Too much work for too uncertain of results which means too much risk for the reward for a contractor.

I gave the lady whose top is pictured above a link to a poultice and said goodbye. I'd rather have her slightly mad at me for not being more helpful than whining about paying for my third trip out because the top still doesn't look good. That's internet poison.

I have seen that discoloration before-- I believe the previous owner was using a rubber drain board.
