replacement windows

We are in San Diego, it gets up to 105 degrees in the summer for a few days, and below freezing in the winter. We are inland, in hill country. We need to replace our windows and are looking for advice as to brand. It is a nice home, with wooden windows now, we want to preserve the look of the house, but without the problems of wood. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

There are three types of frames: wood, aluminum and plastic.

I live in New Mexico and just replace my aluminum windows with all vinyl Mil-Gard low-e Argon gas windows. They have a lifetime guarantee against breakage, clouding, shrinkage, and yellowing. I am very pleased with these windows, and we have the temperature extremes you do. The best part is NO air infiltration, cutting down on dust inside the house!

Pella aluminum clad wood if you can afford them. Fiberglass is not better than wood, imho, and is the same price point. If you have point real estate, definitely stick with the aluminum clad wood or post your zip code (i'm in the same county and have been thru this personally) or community and I'll have more advice. Vinyl is very limited in options but the price point is considerably less. Depending on your roof and color scheme, it can really devalue a home. Profiles vary greatly in price, too, so it is worth it to consider the overall look when you replace to see if the builder got it right the first time for your home style architecturally - lots of times the answer is no, so it is best to look at how to make it nicer by selecting the right window profile and carefully evaluating grille styles..

Wow, lots of great advice. My zip code is 91935, Jamul, about 20 miles due east of downtown. I've put up some photos. The ones being replaced are already replacement windows, the ones with out any mullions on the left side of the house. We are also replacing the door in the first photo, thinking of matching it to the rest of the doors on the house, which look good. The last photo shows what the rest of the house looks like, kind of charming in a big house way.

Yep, you have a tile roof like i do and vinyl just does not work well unless you are willing to work with tan on all the interiors so it is tan inside and out. Vinyl does not perform as well as timber in a fire, but as it will melt before glass breaks but timber will hold its structural properties in high heat (glass will break first). Charming house - go price them both - maybe it is just clad doors you need.
