I've never grown sweet potatoes before, but it looks great!

When did you plant, and what varieties? I yanked out a Purple Passion around July 20, to make room for something else, and it only had roots about a third of an inch thick.

Has anyone else noticed that if you move the vines around, and they end up lying sideways with the leaves facing sideways, within a couple of days, the leaves have turned back up straight?

Red Garnet and Georgia Jets, both planted in ground about May 10th. The mounds I dug up were one of each variety. They both produced some baking sizes but there was room for growth for the smaller tennis ball sized ones.

I don't move vines around to break soil rooting. I still get huge potatoes.

Also I need to keep the high ridge dryer to guard against scurf in my high organic soil. Also those rootings can pick up moisture for the central plant.

Love me some sweet potatoes. For those who haven't grown them, you will never have a more tasty one if your soil is good. In my area they don't seem to have diseases or pests and they like the heat OK. They cover the entire bed so there are few weeds. And it's a blast to dig them up at frost and see what's under there.

I used to buy 12 plants for $4 at the nursery. During winter some of the taters will try to sprout in storage, and the past two years I've potted up the small ones and used those instead of buying. Works just fine.

Oddly, despite me seeing those developing flower buds, I still don't have any flowers.

Next year, I want to plant my sweet potato rows between spring crops, so by the time the sweets are really vining all over, the spring crops will be long gone.

That's a good idea. I do that with onions and garlic, in a grid system, leaving space for peppers, tomatoes, etc. I haven't tried it in the sweet potato bed but they do have to go in last where I am (they don't like it below 40F, forget anywhere near frost!).

I have never seen flowers on mine, maybe they are very small and nondescript?

Some varieties like Beauregard, Carolina Ruby bloom profusely. Others I have never seen bloom, Carver, Porto Rico for example. For those worried about the length of vines , there are bunch varieties that are compact and confine themselves to about 3 feet.

Yes, the Ruby variety starts blooming quite early.

So one of my Purple Passion plants has a flower. Just one.

BTW, what is this? The oldest leaves have some "spotting" of some sort.
