I would definitely go with a dark glossy gray to match the dark countertop but also add an interesting element. You have plenty of white!

I think you would regret not adding a dark element.

Have your counter tops installed prior to selecting a backsplash. You'll want to bring samples into the home and look at them with the counters within your lighting.

No to the floral. Clashes with counter. Yes to darker grey with no pattern, and do as Cinar said and wait for the counters.

First of all, your kitchen is gorgeous! I love the idea of bringing in some darker shades of gray or interesting patterns to compliment your cabinets and countertops. You could do the same pattern for the entire backsplash, or do a decorative pattern just above the cooktop.

@gohandyman.us the counter top is white with light grey veining, so would the dark grey backsplash work with it?

@cinar yes, I would wait until the countertop is in (next week). Just wanted to get ideas what direction to go :)

@Stacey thanks. I was thinking the space above the stove is not high enough to put a decorative pattern on it. but I will think about it. If so, then the rest of the tiles should be pretty plain,right?

I would keep it simple and keep island as the focal point. This is my kitchen just to give you an idea of how it might look. We still have some finishing touches but love it so far

Not everything can be a star. If you love your counters, then pick a light gray to help play up the veining -- something like the gray color in the floral tiles picture, or it could be gray glass tiles as well. Glossy white would be my second choice, but it doesn't give much contrast from the cabinets, so I'd almost prefer a new color (pale blue, say) if you don't want the gray.

A light blue, light grey, or white would be lovely. But keeping it simple is probably the best idea. Below are a few examples to aid you in your selection.
