The stone is installed upon a compacted gravel base according to construction standards for dry laid masonry. We typically avoid setting walks or patios upon a concrete slab, as the concrete in our freeze/thaw environment makes masonry maintenance more of a chore (maintaining mortar joints etc upon a slab). In addition, by installing upon compacted gravel, the costs of labor are reduced (wet laid masonry is more costly due to the increase in materials and labor), and should a stone ever need to be replaced from accidental damage, the work required to replace it becomes much simpler.

This is a different methodology than our stoop and porch construction, which is always mortared in place on concrete that has a frost footing (to prevent frost heave from moving or damaging the structural framework under the stone veneer). Thanks for the question!
