Wouldn't privacy or view needs dictate your choice? If you need privacy, use curtains on rings for ease of use. If the view is more important, use immobile side panels to add some color, pattern, or visual interest to the wall. Or just let the door be a door and dress only the window with a textured roman shade.

Just so you hear a range of viewpoints, I don't like curtains and don't use them in my house. We have an older house with detailed woodwork around the windows, so I like to highlight the architectural features without distractions.

If you have a passion for textiles, like I do, you desire curtains. And perhaps you even design and sew your own chair and sofa slipcovers, too. I collect beautiful fabrics and set them aside for Some Day. Although I love windows with wood trim that can stand alone and be enough, my 1990's home has little charm where the windows are concerned. So I use flowy, white dotted curtains over textural bamboo shades to achieve the look I want. My windows would seem naked without fabric. But you may decide you don't need curtains at all.

These ideas are very helpful. Thank you. I love the open look of no curtains and I don't want to hide the beautiful view of my backyard, but my windows do look a little boring right now. They don't have any architectural features. They are just plain 'ol windows. Would it look strange to have curtains on the window and to leave the french sliding glass doors just as they are? I think the doors are pretty just as they are.

We are having the same dilemma now until we decided to keep the curtains since our window is large and curtains are the best option we could get for now.

Cindy, I did a search on that question because I have a huge patio slider that I don't want to put anything on (shutters, curtains or even shades would make too much of a design statement because of their size) and the response from designers was that a slider or a pair of French Doors do not have to have a window treatment on them, nor do they have to match other windows in the same room. They can stand alone and not appear to have been overlooked.
