Why does the thread pull out of the needle when I start to sew?

I have a vintage sewing machine from the 1970's that was tuned up last year and seemed to be working fine. I just use it for occasional alterations. Today I tried to use it and every time I started to sew the thread came out of the needle. I did this about 9 or 10 times before I gave up. This has never happened before. I did not change any settings on the machine since I used it last. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Thank you.

Cancel that! I just rethreaded the upper thread and it's working now. It must have been going through the tension spring incorrectly.

1 - You are not starting with the thread-puller in the highest position.

2 - You aren't pulling out a long enough "tail" and holding onto it

Glad you figured it out. Didn't see this until today. I was going to suggest that you either had it threaded incorrectly or the thread was too tight.

yeah, the take-up lever's job is to pull away any slack. if you don't hold onto the tail of the thread either with your hand or by having the thread secure in the fabric, the thread will pull out of the needle.
