I'm thinking you want to coordinate the wall color with the fireplace. I sampled colors from the fireplace with my Paint.NET program and the grays have undertones that range from yellow to green to cyan and blue. Now the photo you show could be off from what you see, but paint always has undertones so you might look for warm grays. Benjamin Moore has a large selection of grays in various Color Collections. In addition to their gray collection, look at their neutral and white collections. When you find a color you like click on See In Room to get a better feel for the color over a large space. For instance, BM Horizon 1478 has a yellow-green undertone that makes it warmer.

If you can tell me which grays are on the wall now as samples, I can help. In terms of contrast, you'll have to go either pretty light or relatively deep to differ from the stone. Decide which way you want to go.. then I can suggest a specific hue. Did you by any chance try anything off the 7017 Dorian Gray strip? Your stone looks a bit warmer gray, that might work. Try Benjamin Moore "Wish" AF 680. Nice and warm , not silvery or blue. If that's a marble hearth beyond the drop cloth? Rip it an use a dark gray soapstone. It's reading blue.

I agree with changing the hearth first it is fighting with the beautiful stone, then go to Home depot and pick out different grays in the smallest container and paint on wall, if someone suggests a color it may look different on your wall because of your lighting, I just painted a table and chairs in a medium gray and the first gray I picked had purple tones to it, getting those tiny containers at home depot saves a lot of money and wasted paint
