To me, using washi tape could just call attention to the things about the dresser that you don't like--straight lines and dark color. You could certainly fill in the drawer fronts inside the trim with tape. Washi tape tends to be in bright colors and patterns that might overwhelm the rest of your decor (see below). I see a very neutral carpet and wall in your photo. If you want this piece to stand out, then washi tape might be the way to go. Here's a pic of a washi tape rolls set available on Amazon for $18.

My guest room has a tall mahogany dresser and two matching nightstands- probably the most traditional furniture in my house. They are family pieces from my husbands family and I would not paint them. Paired them with a black head board with grey menswear upholstery, a yellow chair, and white linens on the bed. Modern light fixtures and art and the room looks modern yet comfortable.

You have a nice piece of furniture, don't destroy it trying to make it something it isn't. Work with it.
