How to design my office?

I'm stumped. I love my office. It has wonderful built ins, fun navy and light grey stripes, big windows - but I can't figure out how to configure the furniture. What's missing? What should I add? Is the chair too small? Do I need a table? Do I need art on the striped wall? HELP!

good point, currently there isn't a lot of furniture in the room, which I what I need advice on. Should I get a bigger chair? a console table? It's a small room, and I just can't figure out what furniture it needs? I agree with getting larger club chairs, but I'm taking the photo from the room entrance and I can't fit two club chairs as it would block the entry into the room

Maybe you can replace the chair you have now with a white chaise chair like the picture I'm attaching and add some throw pillows to accessorize! Put the chaise at an angel not up against the wall... It will fill up the space, give you more seating and not overpower the room.

Sorry the other picture didn't show correctly... This one may be a little bulky but it's just so you get an idea.

actually - that's a great idea!! who makes this chaise?

If this room is used mainly as an office, I would get a countertop made to fit in the center of the built ins and come out to the middle of he Ron to form a T. So that sitting at the desk you would have your back to the striped wall. It you go in to get comfy and read a book I agree with the suggestion of getting a nice chaise,

I found this one on an image search.... Just looked for one to show you what I meant... But I'm sure you can find them in furniture stores or look them up online!

I'd put a console/work table at the window with 2 nice stools.

Charming space. Tell us how you use the space. Do you work from home? Do clients come in? Or is this your private space?

The answers to those questions will make a difference to what we propose.

If it was my home office, I would want space for meeting with clients, so would want another chair & table. If it was my space only, I would go for chaise, floor lamp & small table for tea, wine.....

Luv the stripes & would not add art. Could add bamboo blind to warm up window a bit, or a roman shade. Keep it simple as that is style you have so far.

Love the tea and wine idea!!! LOL.

What about not using the built in as your desk and facing a desk to the window?

I am a big fan of window treatments to soften a room. In this room, I would go white...add a second chair, with a mirrored table/lamp between them (for said wine and tea). I would switch out the rug to a shag for texture. Your stripes and high contrast in colors are very well done.

Thank you so much for all of your suggestions!! I want this room to be more of a study/ curl up with a book/have a glass of wine room rather than a true office. So, I'm leaning towards the chaise/setee idea rather than more work surface. Agreed I need window treatments. I struggle a bit with furniture layout. I attached a few more photos so you can see how you enter the room and how I big piece of furniture would block the walkway. Thanks again. So impressed with the feedback!

luv your style. If this is your space, all you need a comfy chaise & small side table (which you appear to have). I would probably use a floor lamp for lighting., placed behind the chaise. Place chaise so you can see out window for serene moments.

If it was my space, I would keep the beachy simple look & only add a canvas roman shade or a bamboo blind. Bamboo would blend with rug you are using.

If you need ideas for chaise, here are sites I frequent: Joss & Main, Wayfair, Gilt & Hautelook

Then all you need is a coloured throw - I can't read w/o a throw at least covering my feet!!! and some tea or wine with a real page turner

    Enjoy your charming "me" space!

You've continued the "fun" idea with the acrylic desk chair, so carry on with other items that work well with navy.

Your style reminds me of Jonathan Adler - look at his website for ideas - and he is having a 50% off sale now.

Well, I don't agree that you need window treatments. Your windows and woodwork are beautiful and you have a charming view. I would leave it all uncovered.

How about this for a chaise? It is a flexible daybed. Or this lounger... I think you should keep it casual and fun -no formal tufted seating, just great colors!

I would have a larger chair or settee and then add one of these bar carts from Shop Society Social.

epeale, could not find the chaise I was hoping to locate; however U have some suggestions on here that are nice. Living Zeal in orange from Decoenthusiasta i luv. Also the chaise from Yosul. It is a bit bulkier than the one I was looking for but same style.
Important Question - are you a sitter or a snuggle downer when you read? I am a snuggle downer & I want to be able to lie down & fall asleep if I feel so inclined. So I have a chaise.
However, I found this sharp looking chair & ottoman, which would look quite smart in your office.

You have great suggestions. Ask if there is anything else you need. Post pic of finished room.

A room should be furnished by its function and the preferences of the user.
    1. Are you OK spending the bulk of the time facing a wall instead of facing out towards the window?
These days many are replacing their desktop devices for more mobile laptops or pads. It would have the added bonus of giving less direct daylight to the screen for better viewing. In that case you may want to put a smaller desk or table and comfortable, decorative office chair by the window.
    2. If you often have conferences in this room with one or more people you may want to add small, comfortable swivel chairs. Or, if it is only you taking the occasional break perhaps one comfortable lounge chair with footstool, but a very spare design.
    Hope to have helped.
