If you choose to do a herringbone, just make sure you get it proportionately correct. Standard subway tiles won't work. They have to be longer to get the herringbone shape right. Some smaller herringbone come on mesh sheets, but I find those generally have larger grout lines, which I'm not crazy about. But if light enough grout is used it isn't a big problem.

Here is white long tiles done in the herringbone. See how the longer tiles make a great statement. You could get away with this look if you like it.

I would do all one color in your kitchen, but that is a personal choice.

The last look is great, all same colors tiles though.

I'm a big fan of white subway tile. It's timeless. Your kitchen is gorgeous!!! Your countertops are very eye catching and I think that if you use marble for your backsplash, the countertops will lose their punch. The herringbone is indeed a great idea. Good luck!

Your countertops are demanding all the attention. Don't do a backsplash that competes with them - they'll both be fighting. The countertops are "bossy" - choose a backsplash that is very subtle and allows the counters to take center stage.

You're marble counters are gorgeous. I think if you used the selections in your photos it will get too busy. I think a nice glass tile would look beautiful. With the gold accents to match your pendants.

Here are some other options we looked at. The whiter marble and frosted grey glass..... I thought the grey glass added too much grey. In my search for white glass I found so many horror stories about it looking green and I don't want that. If I could find a really white glass i would consider it but have yet to find it! I am really into the idea of the brass schluters but I'm nervous it might be too much over time. My husband thinks I might not live it years from now.

Melissa Gallagher there are two more pendant lights going over the sink. They are brass and glass. Plus my dining room is adjacent and has brass/gold pendants. We are obviously not finished yet with renovation!

You've picked some statement lighting, so don't wimp out on the tile. You have a lot of cabinets and a lot of white space. More white tile is ....just more white....

It needs warmth and color. Not more pattern. Too much cold pattern already in that stone. You need something with minimal pattern. Back painted glass. Or a very subtle tone on tone hand glazed tile, in an Actual Color. Celadon. Periwinkle. Sage. Black. Daffodil. Cobalt. Warmth isn't going to be achieved with more brass. There's already a forest of brass hanging from the ceiling. Too much already. Give it a rest, and do some recessed lights. And some rugs.

Here is a tile with gray tones in it. Feel you might let your counter be on main stage. Your lighting in the home is beautiful! I love the countertops as well!

Then you could keep your white or marble or whatever tile as the backsplash.

This room just needs something else or it's going to be so "flat" . ..when it could be "wow"

I would not do a tile in colour. You can add colour in so many other ways. Vases, rugs, etc. If you use colour tiles, you are stuck with them for many years. I once read a comment that someone posted "if you have to use a hammer to get rid of it, go neutral. I just redid my kitchen and I kept that in mind. I went white like you, but have added interest with paint, art, texture with a rug, etc. You are right about glass tiles, they take on a colour of their own. Your kitchen is not "boring"!! It's glam and classy!! You have beautiful taste! We all have different opinions. My husband always says "That's why they make dresses in different colours"! Go with what makes you happy!

Thanks for the source on the pendants. I love the monochromatic look with the island as the star. Keep the backsplash quiet so it doesn't become overdone. You can always add color if you want. Personally, I would not. Some white enameled pieces like a colander with fruit all one color like lemons or Granny Smith or if you must do some color the cobalt blue enamel to set on back counter or enameled tea pot. You have done a great job so far. Keep it timeless and change accessories as the spirit moves you.

My only change would be to gold cabinet hardware. ;)

I agree with lexi! Go simple with your backsplash, even at the risk of being a bit "boring" if necessary. Add colour/warmth/interest with textiles, accessories and artwork.
You're unlikely to regret that decision. But every day there is another "Help! I hate my busy backsplash" dilemma on Houzz.

Gorgeous kitchen. You have so many tile options. Our suggestion is marble. However here are some of our designs to look at that might give you more options -

Every one of the suggestions or photos of a bland backsplash has a colourful island.
So punch up the island or take a hint from your beautiful stove and add a splash of colour. Recently I noted a program that suggested just using straight glass cut exactly to size and place whatever the colour you love behind it. So go warm,cool or wild with colour and just put a piece of glass on it to keep it clean then in 2 years you hate that colour just remove the glass gently and change the colour or effect behind it.
But don't drop the ball on your renos now and make everyone fall asleep in their martinis.

The most exciting part of the kitchen is your stove nobs! Colour!

Don't let folks talk you into color when you obviously wanted a monochromatic look. That is classic and beautiful. Why plan now to take it out! Everything "goes out of style" in about 3-5 years now anyway so do what pleases you most. If your guest fall asleep, that's another problem and you need new friends! lol

Mouse house- I equate it to an elegant black dress. You accessorize with jewelry, shoes, etc. This kitchen isn't accessorized yet. Color will be added with art, rugs, trinkets, tea kettle etc. :)

tneale2 you're style doesn't have to agree with everyone. As designers we design for our clients taste. In the end you're living in it. With your options and taste I would go with a subtle backsplash. Nothing with a lot of movement, because you're marble has a lot of detail and movement already. The options you chose, id do the glass tile. You can even add some color, if you feel courageous, with a darker grout. Something that will bring out the color in either, your marble or your brass fixtures. I always use the black dress as a comparison! Add color with appliances and accessories! Not everyone likes color...
If you do want color, you could do a gold glass tile. But don't let anyone push you to do something you don't feel comfortable with. I always say if you aren't 100% sure you will wear that dress, you will probably buy it and leave it in the closet!

I recommend a stick-on sparkly off-set white, gray, and black tile for the backsplash. It's very easy to install yourself and they look as professional as full tile. My dad has them in his home.

I am looking at super white quartzite too how is yours holding up? I am in love with it but my cooktop is in a 10 ft bar so afraid I might have to put Dakota Quartz in cement color for the durability . Although I could make my husband do all the cooking outside hehe! I wish there would have been a place elsewhere for the stove but already have the piping in for the gas .

I would do a Gray herringbone backsplash with grout the same color as the tile. Choose a gray from your beautiful counters which are the star. Not subway tile, but something narrower that comes in sheets. It will add interest without distracting from the countertop. Make it just a little darker than your cabinets.

Claire, the answer isn't simple. My perimeter is holding up great!! It's as sturdy as granite. Fabricator made a mistake on my island so we had to get a replacement slab. The new slab is very finicky. It's etching easily. No stains though. Sooooo we have to be super careful with what we put on the island, and basically treat it like marble. Fabricator came and buffed etches out and resealed. Looks perfect again, so the good news is that it seems to clean up easily. It took them only 30 minutes or so to buff it out. That said, it's beautiful and I love it!! Good luck!!

oh So sorry to hear about your island. I found some beautiful slabs so I am going to take a glass tile with me to test the slab(heard that should help) and I will sneak in a piece of lemon if I can.
