Need help with area rug

Please help! We have just brought home new furniture for our living room. We want to keep the wall colour, and drapes, but can replace the coffee tables, remove the piano and record cabinet behind the chair. We are open to moving things around as well. What style of area rug would go with the patterned drapes/furniture? What size should it be? All suggestions/comments are appreciated.

Find another spot for piano…any spot in your front hall? Gone, at least for now, the cabinet and the glass curio.

I suggest facing the sofas; buying one more wing chair (love it, btw) and facing the two wings to the fireplace.

Keep the coffee table because now it is placed perpendicular to the fireplace and serves both sofa.

Rug may be needed only between the sofas and under the coffee.

If a room has great hardwood, I like to see more floor and less rug.

I know you'd like to keep the drapes and that's fine, but may I just suggest that you remove the valances? That will give your room a fresher and lighter look, as would the removal of the piano. There are small items that clutter the room rather than make an impact, and I would remove all of them, and also the wooden chair. I'm afraid the wall sconces are too small for that room. I would consider painting the mantel the same white color as the surround, and painting the gold stripes on the fire cover black. You'll have a much more integrated look. I'm afraid the blue tiles of the fireplace surround add color that relates to nothing else and just distract from the other elements in the room. The large painting to the left of the window over the wooden chair needs to be moved upward considerably.

As for the carpeting, it's really important that it be a large size because that will make the room look larger and give more of a dramatic impact. Your look seems to be fairly traditional, and a richly colored Oriental rug that has cool tones to blend with the walls might be a good way to go. However, you need to look at many rugs to decide what style speaks to you and go from there.

if you want to have a rug that goes with your curtains, we would need a better pic of the curtains.

..just to say that I love your colors. can you share your fireplace surround? is it blue slate?

since I love seeing hardwood I'm with JudyG here...to work on an arrangement that will require (relatively) smaller rug

Do move the piano if you have another good spot for it, the wooden chair, ..then re evaluate

I can see the vase on one side of the fireplace, what are the objects on the other? can they be taken away?

Now for the rug question..I think first the function should be determined. How often is the room used and by how many people? Should rug be able to withstand high traffic, or light use is okay?

You can do pattern and you can do plain..that's another major decision. Really depends on how much pattern you'd love to see in this room.If going pattern-I'd prefer it being different than the drapes' one. Size-wise, etc. Usually eaier on eyes, thus more appealing, unless one specifically creates this effect of a "jewel box"

You can do a very subtle pattern. Or you can make it interesting with texture only.

I'll try to find some examples for you.

(yes close ups of curtains would be helpful)

..ok..I'll post several..some are about color, some are about pattern, some, texture..partially the reason for posting them together is for me to better see them next to the photo of your room. it's very hard to alternate bewteen the tubs so much easier to make mistakes

now when I'll see them together will be easier to compare and see what direction is a miss, and what is worth exploring further. you can also give me hints on "absolute no's" and "maybe yes's" that's how we' ll know better what you're more comfortable with/what speaks to you. then one has a jumpstart for search..

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I am not much of a decorator myself, but would love to finally have the feeling that this room is finished. Still a lot of work to do, but with some of your comments, I feel like I am at least able to move in the right direction.

I will definitely remove the piano, the wood chair and the record cabinet. I will also try moving the furniture (after I can remove the piano), so that the couch and love seat are facing, and move the wing chair to face the fireplace. Will it look OK with a couch and love seat (two different sizes) facing, rather than two couches (the same size)? I apologize that this wasn't clear in the original request. I will consider another wing chair and possibly a small table between the two chairs (as finances allow).

I love the idea of painting the oak mantle the same cream colour as the area surrounding the fireplace. We have a fair bit of oak trim in our house, that I would also like to paint out. The fireplace has teal tiles (the house originally had teal on the lower part of the walls, along with teal carpet). I would love to change the tile too, but will need to look into the costs and options to do this.

Removing the valances (from the drapes) is an interesting idea. I will look to see what the top of the drapes look like, and definitely give that some consideration.

I will move the large picture (left of the window) up. I had meant to do that before, and just haven't done it yet. I was also just playing with the sconces beside the fireplace, and am not really happy with them either. They will most likely be replaced.

I can/will remove the small items to the right of the fireplace. No worries there.

Thank you for the rug suggestions. I do love some of them, and others... not so much. I love colour and patterns, but am afraid what I pick may end up with too many patterns in the room. I think what I need to do first, is make some of the changes noted above, and then come back to let you know what I like/don't like. Removing the piano (especially), and moving the wing chair(s) away from the drapes may make a big difference to what I may end up liking.

I am attaching additional photos of the drapes. The colour of the walls in this room is Hazelnut. The room is open to the front hall and dining room which are painted in a colour called Cappuccino Froth (a very pale, milky coffee colour).

Thanks again for all of this great input. I really appreciate it.

I may be having some problems attaching new photos of the drapes. Will try again later.
