Altering roof on a small addition: insane, or doable?

As part of an interior gut-remodel of a small addition on the back of my 1922 bungalow, I'm wondering about the feasibility of completely changing the style and slope of roof on the addition. This addition, which I bet started life as a porch, has been tacked on with no regard for the bungalow's rooflines and it drives me absolutely insane. And besides the aesthetic problem of the mismatched rooflines, the current roof offers no shade at all for this south-facing room.

What I'd like to do, if it were possible at reasonable cost, would be to change this roof to a shed or hipped roof with deep overhang, to get both shade from the sun and some shelter from wetter weather on the back of the house. I'd have the new roof angles at least play nicely with the original roof.

Am I out of my mind to contemplate a completely new roof structure? Is that a tens-of-thousands-more type add-on to an interior remodeling project? If I am out of my mind (and budget), I'd think about adding awnings and just try to ignore the horrible clash of roof slopes.

Consider a pergola for shade. If the addition is properly constructed, leave it in place; the changes will be prohibitively expensive. And since it's in the back of the house, not the front, curb appeal is not an issue.

I agree, that roof isn't appropriate for blending with the main house. the cost depends greatly on where you are located. My advise would be to call contractors asking about their experience with older homes. The slope from the main house needs to be mirrored on the addition to give a cohesive appearance. The deeper eaves will also help with that. Cute puppy.

Love the Beagle. I agree that on the back of the home its far less of an issue. You could, if it was really visually bothersome to you, move the roof line. If, however, you want to change the interior space as well....then you are effectively re-doing everything and it gets as expensive, if not more, than just starting from scratch.

I agree that the roof distract's from the remainder of home. The 45 degree angled braces from rake to wall will likly interfere with new roof line. If the braces are decorative,that's good. If they are structural(which I doubt),there's work-a-rounds but figure out which to use before you start. To remove and replace existing roof above top plates isn't expensive. On site inspection should answer all you questions.
