it it just me or is the roof very flat?

Good evening. I think I need to make the door darker. It will look stylish and blend with the house.

The old steps were ripped off and new ones and new landscaping is next. This is a 1968 reno. This was what it looked like 2 months ago. We did most of the work ourselves. I will never afford a new modern style home do this is what we did. I love it!

Liv Thorn this is what they call a "Cottage style" roof. The question was what color to paint the door. I dont need critiquing on this I cant change.

Thankyou! Ya we sure did, we live in a tiny village in Saskatchewan so there were alot of "rubber necks" driving by asking about the materials used like the Longboard and Hardi Panels, around here you can buy it but they cant tell you how to put it up!

Are you sure the white part can be painted? If so paint it the same color as the door. Paint the storm door that color too. It will make the front door look wider. I think that will distract from the fact that the door is not modern.

I would suggest a bold door color but since you want a color from the stones I would go with a mid tone, not the darkest and not the lightest.

The stone around the door is a gray tone? Sorry, difficult to tell as the photo was taken at night. I'd go with a paint color that is similar, but a bit darker if it's a gray tone. Would look nice with the very dark window framing and still give some contrast from the stone. You've done great job on the reno!

Thankyou, yes the stone is greys or as they call it slate mountain ledge. Ya sorry the picture was taken at night like an hour after the stone was put on, i was a bit excited.

Worth a try... I think it may be too cool, with the wood adjacent. Yet, you should get a pint of any colors you like and divide a poster board in to 4's and try several. A warm very dark charcoal that is nice is Iron Mountain by Benjamin Moore. Unfortunately, BM doesn't sample paint!!

Computer monitors can vary a color so much. One Iron Ore looks great below it looks black... Peppercorn is a nice color too... cool though. Worth trying a few. I'd sample them as I'm sure you would :)

Is there a warm wood tone around the door frame matching the wood on the far end of the home?

Looks like a bronze storm door. I'd match the door to that for a sleek, modern look to go with the rest of what your trying to achieve.

the doors windows storm door and soffits are both a mix of Aztec and Architectural Brown which are almost identical. the wood siding is called longboard in dark National Walnut the side door is fiberglass and we had it professionally stand to try and match the longboard. I'm not really into warm tones but I fell in love with the longboard and as for the windows which I did first I was scared to go with black facing south and worried about fading so when Twas the next darkest color. I think the stone is closer to the bottom picture, I picked the Slate to try and break up all the Browns I agree I think I should try and match the interior door to the storm door instead of trying to pull more gray but at least I know a color in this case would look kind of dumb and it's narrow down to one of those neutrals.

I live NOW in the Mid West and removed my storm door because I hated the look. I live VERY close to one of the great lakes and we get a lot of wind/rain/snow. I've never missed the storm door after I put in beautiful fully paned doors except I miss my screens in the Spring and Fall. I don't know where you live and if you want to remove the storm door or not? I've not had any issues with my doors in 8 years after replacing the front doors on the home and no storm doors. Albeit, I do miss the screens as mentioned. Just a thought is all.

I don't like the look either of storm doors but we don't have central air and I live in Saskatchewan so the summers are very hot the winters are very cold so I need a storm door plus it is brand new just installed last year

Again, you did just get new storm door(s) painted and matched and get the color down and all. So, best option is to match the storm door. I personally hated the storm door(s) and it really served no purpose even in my very bad inclement weather area.

since it gets as low as 40 degrees below zero here storm door is a must unless you want to pay for heating costs, so I got a full View vented storm door where the screen disappears so it's not too bad at all

Yep, thats in Saskatchewan Canada, then sometimes 35-40 above in winter.

You've done a beautiful job on the home. I'd match the storm door since it is most definitely necessary or very close to! Once you have your stairs in and the rest it will all come together beautifully... GET GOING, it's going to be cold soon :)

I am going to paint it from inside the house no worries.

Next spring we will be building new steps, no rush on that as they are basically for looks, we use the side door.

Well I painted the door the same color as the storm foor and I dont think it does anything for the house.

Given that you must have a storm door living where you do I do like it. It looks modern and I believe that's the look you are seeking. The prior wood tone door had too much warmth as I'm sure you know. Appears to tie in to the window frames and compliment the stone surrounding it. Keep in mind you have no porch, no plantings and it's just a house sitting what looks like high on the ground for now as you still have to add all that next Spring.

Are you planning lights to flank the front doors, do you know the style of porch planned, etc. I don't feel anything different would look better IMO. A door with color to me would not look right on this style home. It's clean and minimalistic.

I don't like it as the same color as the storm door either. The storm door is the same color as your trim, so it kinda works as a trim piece. I would go with an earthy color for your front door. Too bright will look strange.

I do see you have the under eaves lighting so you may not have modern lights planned for each side of the door. I wouldn't go any lighter and going darker on both the storm and front if you did I'd only go a tad darker so I think it looks absolutely fine.

I would personally wait until you have your porch and front yard done and re access at that time how it looks. I think it looks nice with that home and 100% better than the red tone. The only other option would be a modern door with a little glass and again in -45 degrees even though doors have stellar good glass panes?? Given that the storm door takes away from that as well.

Doors as such would look very nice on the home, but an investment with a storm door blocking it to be sure. I like it what don't you like about it?

The storm door has to stay so agree a bright door IMO would look bad.

Every door I see is very much as your own on the style you are going for.

It's all going to make a giant different when you get the rest in. I'd hold off and live with it. I did a mock up of some modern lights flanking the door, but don't see now how you could install easily as the stone is in.

I might try Urbane Bronze or a dark olive color. Someone above suggested both of those, and the door might stand out just a little being different.

The color I used for the door was "Willow" by Benjamin Moore which is the foundation color and very very close to the windows and storm doors. I didnt think it made sence to bring yet a different brown or bronze color into the picture if it would be so close yet different than i allready had. My sister loves it, I dont hate it, I think it is matches and way better than the old red, I just think its there. I still have a grey in my mind but will wait.
Porter I love the light fixtures you added, we covered over the one outlet for the front door and put in potlights, i did concider keeping it just for looks, i suppose i could somehow add a light on either side and just not have it function.
As for the front step I plan to get my family businessto build one out of steel and top it with tile and i like the look of planters on either side leftvto rust as they call it "corten" steel?

I like the gray, and I think it will look spiff once you have stairs and lights, etc. But here are a couple of other cool colors you could consider...

Ok, well I do love the door...... my suggestion is live with it for now..... I think the whole thing in your minds eye will change once you get what you've posted above in and so on. I do like the door VERY much. Again, very hard to appreciate it as it's a home raised above the ground in appearance with no foundation plantings/landscape which I'm sure you'll do a great job with!

I love the door samples you gave, when our furnace goes andcwe then get central air I will then have concider getting a new door minus a storm door but i would miss the view and the fresh air more so than the extra warmth. Isnt life complicated in the first world? lol

That's very true... we live very, very close to Lake Erie and we can get VERY high winds and a lot of rain and naturally a lot of snow. I have fully paned double doors on a large colonial and did this after removing a larger door with sidelights. Removed the storm door and say EVERY SPRING THRU EARLY FALL, "I miss the screen we could put on the storm door." Yet, well.... traded it for looks and I open the windows on the front of the house. Yet, I do agree with you completely... I'd keep it as you have it worse than I with your weather. Nothing better than a nice breeze coming in the front door.

I love what you've done with your home, and the current door color looks great (smart sister!) I understand the need for storm doors, and love the ones (like you have) with a hidden screen.
