Winter veggies in hanging planters?

Just finished making these three hanging planters from salvaged fenceposts and lattice pieces. They are shallow, 4' long by 6" wide & 5" deep.

I'd love to plant them with salad greens or other edible winter-hardy plants. We live right on the border of zone 6b/7a, mild-moderate winters, below freezing but rarely below teens. The spot gets plenty of light. What sort of vegetables, greens or herbs would fit in them and tolerate our winter?

Also, what is the best way to fill them? I am lining them with burlap and I have organic potting mix and a bag of perlite. Will this work?

Those are nice! The soil and burlap idea should work. Sadly without a higher zone or grown indoors/greenhouse they won't really grow much over winter. Some options for winter crops would be kale, carrots lettuce, radishes, beets and rosemary. All this stuff has to be started in Sept so they are a decent size by the time Nov-Dec comes around.

Thanks! And perhaps I'll wait for spring then, or use some small established plants from the nursery until it gets too cold.

I'm not sure about the burlap. I'm thinking it'll rot away after a couple of years. Maybe some good quality weed cloth instead? Go with starts for this year! Nancy

just asking. that wood looks more like fencing bd rather than posts. If Im looking correctly. But wow looks good. Are thy stained or painted and what type of wood do you think they are? Yeah, I wanted to do cedar boxes but not done so yet.GOT THE WOOD ETC BUT GOT SO MANY PROJECTS ALREAY.. excuse my typos still trying to get used to the Mac laptop keyboard..the touch pad etc is so touchy...Rah>>>>

Thanks. These are made from picket fence boards and pieces of criss-cross lattice, they looked like this:

I removed nails, scrubbed with deck cleaner, sanded, cut, and stained them, then screwed everything together and bought specialty brackets. I actually took pictures of the whole process if you're curious. It was worth it but I probably won't be making any more. I do wish they were cedar but waterproofing stain is good enough.

Not trying to nit pick. BUT. yeah what confused me was the word "posts" in your description.... instead I though they looked more like fencing boards...

.WE had the same type fencing we put up many years ago in our former home. I helped Hubby redo lots of it over the many years. during the many years we lived there .

when we were prepping to move and when we originally installed the fencing

matter of fact I as probably the one to go get such. LOL

But I think you did a Fabulous job and I luv repurposing good stuff...too. Take care and hope you stuff grows fabulously as one gardener to another;;...I hope to do the same next season...thee is something so satisfying about growing our own stuff....
