Can lights - Kitchen

The soffit will be removed above stove top. My ceilings are 8 feet. From ceiling to cook top down measures about 5 feet. Now I am deciding what size can lighting should I use to go over my sink and counter top area. Removing big fluorescent fixture above sink. I like the look of the 4 inch. I don't like the way the bulb is recessed in some of the cans. I like the bulb to be flush with the trim piece in the wall also. The area to be lighted above my sink/counters would be approx 8 ft x 2.5 ft. I would like the light to spread out somewhat onto the counters. I have no lighting in the middle between sink and stove, but my electrician feels I should have plenty of lighting with the sink and stove top cans. I know it will be more than I had. There are so many types of bulbs too! Warm.. Cool... etc...

Also installing cans over my cook top counter. Space measures approx 6.5 ft x 2.5 ft... Thinking I would also like the 4 inch cans.. Just not sure how many as this will be my only light over my working area. Thanks

You are putting in a lot of task lighting. You might want to consider having some ambient lighting. See article at link.http://www.americanlightingassoc.com/Lighting-Fundamentals/3-Types-of-Lighting.aspx

I agree that I like the lens of the bulb to be at or just above the surface, not truly recessed. I mostly use LED retrofits with standard cans to achieve that.

Armchairshopper I do have a ceiling fan/light fixture for general lighting on the other side of my stove in dining/ eating area and that gives plenty of light there. All the can lights on the other side will be on separate dimmer switches. My Island kitchen is compact where I prepare food and that is why I need task lighting on both sides of that area of kitchen as before with just the flouresent above the sink it was very dark. I feel having another fixture or general lighting on the ceiling in that area of my kitchen would be to close to the other fixture in my eating area and look way to cluttered, in my opinion, and that is why I choose the can lighting to blend in with the ceiling.
