8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoShawna, you are a very good candidate for a sectional. Run its length against the wall, and add a large, non matching ottoman coffee table in front.
Your room is multitasking very hard in this photo, and you will need to pull the desk out of the corner to make room, but if it absolutely can be nowhere else, consider a sofa table butt against the sectional. It can act as a desk, with the chair pulled up as needed, but might also double as the receiving area when you enter the house. In a perfect world you find one with a shelf that can house the castle when it is not being played with. That would provide you the space for an occasional chair next to the fireplace . This one is only 25"" wide.
The archway trim by the fireplace makes us think there used to be something behind it. If there is a bit of storage room behind a false wall, bring it! If, as I suspect, it was meant to be decorative, I would remove the trim, and paint the fireplace stack out, so we get to focus on the fireplace face.. I like your idea of shelves, and think you might look for something lighter in feel.

8 years agoI concur with the remarks about a sectional and an easy chair. I think it would also help if you painted the entire area a lighter color; any color you like but a very pale version to enlarge the room visually. When shopping for a sofa/sectional look for something comfortable but with narrow arms and possibly a chaise element.
I think this is what the set up would look like as advised by studio1 0010. The sectional runs along the large window and make a 90 degree at the entry door. There is a round cocktail table with one side chair. The room is neutral and has an accent in pale aqua, with the TV and the fireplace viewed the same as your room
Note area rug sizes in each room; furniture front is always on rug.
Here is a similar set up with colors that are readily available in the market place....low sleek and blue/grey
Same situation, it works so nicely with minimal items. and the entry door is nicely behind the sofa.
Love the navy; so on trend and really pretty and fresh with console behind sofa.
Remember to draw your room to scale and take it with you when you shop. You can also find sofa and dimensions on the Houzz.com site and draw what will fit so you can take those numbers with you to find the perfect pieces. Look for thin arms.
