kitchen suggestions needed

A relative is updating her very small kitchen. She wants to add some storage & a bar that will seat two bar stools on the little wall in this pic. Any ideas? She’s painting cabinets white & updating hardware with silver knobs to match stainless appliances. Thanks

what is the width of the space? That is important. You have to be sure you have plenty of space to stand and open the fridge and it appears that area is the main entrance into the room so you need room for passage. If you go with the standard 24" deep cabinets plus a countertop overhang 12" for the stools that is 36". In addition you need space behind the stool so that you can pull it in and out to seat yourself. from what I can tell from the photos you do not have room for that. One suggestion is add a counter with supports and install wall cabinets only. If you can do that and still have at least 42" between someone standing at the fridge with the door open and someone sitting at the bar stool you can squeeze it in. I suggest you add a 84" high by 12" deep pantry on that wall for storage and forget the bar stool seating as I just do not think you have enough room. Good luck!

Too bad a bout that huge fridge which now sticks out and makes the space even smaller .IMO your friend needs storage more than a place for stools and that lighting needs to be changed before she chooses a color for the walls

Agree with Patricia....a counter depth fridge would've been a better fit here given the layout. I think the most you could do would be to add a line of 12 or 15" deep base cabinets for storage on "this wall". Adding any kind of seating would obstruct the path in and out of the kitchen.

It can be done, but she has to really want the seating. The way to do it would be to put 12" wall cabinets on the wall, up where you normally would, and then put just a 15" deep counter with no cabinets underneath on the wall below -- it can be supported with hidden wall brackets. If the wall is long enough, it's possible that she could put one 15" deep base cabinet on one end, with counter enough for two stools next to it, but you need to allow 24" per seat and use backless stools so that they can be slid underneath when not in use. Here are two kitchens where I did stretches of counter for "breakfast bar" seating with no cabinets underneath:

Look for Counterbalance brackets, which attach to a stud in the wall and then extend out to support the counter every couple of feet.

Of course, if storage is a higher priority, she might want to just have cabinets above and below. The cabinets in the second photo above are 15" below and 12" above, but you could even do all 12" cabinets for a sort of "hutch" feeling (especially if you put glass doors on the upper cabinets). Then maybe an overhang on one end for a friend to perch with a glass of wine (or a spouse with a laptop, heh) while you cook, but no real eating space.

Glad to see she took down the grandma scrolling over the window. Hope she enjoys her renovated kitchen!

I would wall-mount a shelf-type counter with decorative corbels and get backless stools that can slide completely beneath when not in use.
