Awesome! What type of hardware would you suggest? Take everything off of top of cabinets as looks too dated?

Maybe some narrow pendant lights over the bar counter too. And something as simple and inexpensive as plain dish towels and potholders will make it look less 80s. Today’s looks tend toward less clutter — so totally agree re taking the decor off of the top of the cabinets and as much of it as possible off the counter.

Cool grays and warm wood tones do not bring out the best in each other. Consider lightening the gray in the walls - possibly to a white with a gray undertone. I have not seen Maritime White in person, but it looks pretty in this pic from This Old House:

I don't mind your decor on the cabinets. It is much more simplified than the cabinet decor of the past which crowded too much - especially fake greenery on top. You don't have that kind of clutter and I think it adds a bit of personality to your kitchen.

I assume you have a vent insert over the stovetop. That is actually higher end (and in my opinion prettier) then just a plain stainless hood, so I would keep that.

I did get new quartz counters, backsplash and farm sink in my wood kitchen. I did a vintage style, but the countertop, backsplash and sink are versatile to style. The farm sink is a short apron style that can be installed on a standard sink base cabinet. Pics are in my "my pics" idea book.

Honestly I think your kitchen looks lovely! I would say if you were going to change something maybe just a fresh coat of paint, a lighter color possibly.

I would start with the floors, they seem to be dating your kitchen. I think your cabinets and counters look great together.

Your kitchen looks nice ..but perhaps the easiest change and update would be to paint the cabinets white ...and the door also ! It would give you an instant modern and clean touch ! Just get prettier things ...to decorate the top ...a big beautiful bowl for fruit ...and remove any and all clutter !

New floors and new countertops. I don't actually mind the paint color. Consider getting rid of the bulky corner cabinet and appliance garage.

Good day. In my opinion, I would have changed the doors from the kitchen lockers.

Put a rope of LED lights on top of the cabinets to eliminate that gloomy darkness above them.

I would say counters and backsplash and maybe some shelving to the left of the sink, but it doesn't need more than that.

It's a very functional kitchen. I would suggest you look at some show homes and visit a few cabinet websites. You gave us no direction to work with. Why do you want to update? Will your neighbourhood housing prices support the cost of renovations? What would make your family life better in the kitchen?
BTW garages are back in popularity as great places to hide the daily use appliances.

I'm going to suggest if you like rustic, you hire a specialty painter to distress your cabinets. They look pretty good shape. If they are nearing 20 years old check the drawers and hinges etc for wear. If they are worn, replace the kitchen cabinets.

If keeping...
Try a tuxedo look with rustic. Use a deeper finish on the bases and a lighter finish on the uppers above the ctop. Your oven area could be a third shade also.

Oddly we are seeing the avocados and pale greens again. I just completed and avocado and antique white/ creamy kitchen. The couple had lived through the 70's but felt it was exactly what they needed to make the kitchen sing.

Use colour - a colour that you love. I encourage you to seek out a local kitchen and bath designer to help you. This is a great kitchen from the view shown. It may just need more drawer banks.

Can you find a home for the trash can? Convert a bank of drawers to a pullout trash?

If you painted your cabs like this ....

too everything off the tops and decluttered,, and possibly build on tops so they go to the ceiling, like this

and off to the left side of your window, do some open shelving like this:

(Notice the two tone colors on that one. it's a dark gray/blue. You could also leave wood on the lowers and just paint the uppers white. up to you)

and add a sconce over the sink

do a new cool splash, some cabinet hardware, and you're done! BTW, everything posted here can be DIY and cost you less than a few hundred.

Another color combo you could do. And also, consider getting a few small pendants for over your peninsula. you need some more lighting
