we purchased an RF remote, which allows you to hide the cable box (and other components) where ever you want. We put ours on a shelf in the basement.

I'm afraid I've told you about as much as I know about them -- my husband is the tech geek in our house so he did all the research and set up. You could probably get one of the guys in BestBuy to tell you everything you need to know.

It is a radio frequency universal remote, so anything in your house that runs on a remote control can be programed into this thing ... if you have remote control window blinds in your media room, you could open and close them with this remote. And the only things we have connected into the back of the tv are the cable line and the power cord ... everything else is on a shelf in the cellar.

You can use a wired IR repeater. Radio shack sells them.
