Help-Playroom and Boy's room makeover ideas

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi All,

We have recently moved to our new home and I have been decorating one room at a time. I am now working on my 5 year old boy's room. He loves arts and crafts. We have a queen size bed in his room and a dresser that I will keep. I recently moved his bed in front of the window so I can put a small desk on the other side for him to work on. I am in the process of assembling the new desk and also a new book shelf so the pictures do not include them. I am now having second thoughts about the position of the bed as I feel it is not maximizing the floor space.

I am posting some pictures of his bedroom.

Art Wall

New bedding and comforter set

The paw patrol bedding was before and I recently got a new bedding set for his room that is white with some patterns on it. I am not planning to paint the wall for now. Looking for some ideas to display his art work, what color curtains will look good with the new bedding. The rug in his room is orange.

I am also looking for ideas for updating his play room in the basement. I would like it to be a family room and some ideas for storage and organization. I also have a treadmill and a small desk (for work from home days) on the other side of the room that is not in the picture.

Thanks!

If he loves arts and crafts then he absolutely needs a space where it's "safe" (that is, can easily be cleaned) to work on them, either in his room or in the basement. You could put down floating rubber interlocking tiles (think what's on the floor in gyms) so that spills can be cleaned up. Then a drafting table, large (maybe metal) flat table, and/or workbench depending on what he likes to do. Add some task lightning with 5000k daylight LED bulbs. A wire shelf to hold his supplies. An easel or a small pedestal to display his most recent work. Paint the walls and color he likes,to but less saturated might be better because it won't cast as much of a reflected hue on his work. He'll love a space to foster his creativity!

How big is the desk you are assembling for his room? I might turn the bed 90 degrees to the left and place the desk between the bed and window wall.

Gray curtains would work well with the new bedding. I might add colorful pillow shams too.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions. @kim I love how the different size frames have been used to display artwork. I have some old picture frames that I can use for same. I know a smaller bed would be better considering the space. I am planning to update the bed later. @er612 thanks a lot for the pictures. They are really helpful. I am going to move the bed 90 degrees and put the desk in between the bed and the window. @peter thanks for your ideas.. I can't wait to get the rubber interlocking tiles now!

Wanted to share the progress I have made for my son’s bedroom so far! Art work on the walls by my son. I will be buying new pillows for the bed and some quotes and frames for the wall where yellow frame with art work is.

Shouod I use wallpapers in his room? If so on which wall? What kind of wallpapers would look good? Any suggestions are welcome!

Love how you made an art collage above his bed, and the bed orientation works very well allowing more light to come into the room. I probably would not put up wallpaper as there is plenty of pattern in the room already with the curtain, bedding and artwork. Thanks for sharing your progress.

I think wallpaper is so permanent and kids change so quickly. I'd stick to using the bedding to reflect his current interests.

    Cute room.
