I just thought there might be something out there.

The sunset garden book is good and I use it a lot but I think it tends to be a bit inclusive so I also sometimes ask on this forum.

By the way, could you identify this plant:

Looks like Portuguese laurel, Prunus lusitanica, grown as a sheared hedge.

ETA: possible boxwood alternatives could be a dwarf hebe like Hebe pinguifolia 'Sutherlandii' or Hebe diosmifolia or Hebe 'Green Globe'.

Ligustrum texanum - taller trim more or pittosporum nana dwarf. Both sturdy shrubs they resist all of above out here in Los angeles should be fine up in Bay Area.

A shrub to maintain between 2' - 3' in milder areas of Calif. is almost going to have to be a dwarf. Unless you like to shear monthly.

Escallonia 'Newport Dwarf' - tough

Pittosporum tobira 'Wheeler's Dwarf' - grows wider than tall

upright Rosemary

Xylosma congestum 'Compacta'

Myrtus communis is incredibly tough and makes a beautiful hedge. Wonderful fragrance when you brush against it. Low water needs.

Golden Guinea vine is a beautiful bush, but will need consistent watering in the summer to keep it looking lush.

Rhaphiolepis umbellata 'Minor'

Kind of an old thread, but ....

I saw a pretty, low hedge a few days ago. It was a mixture of Myrtus communis, Abelia "Kaleidoscope", and Little John bottlebrush — all small stature, low water use choices and a nice mixture of colors and textures.
